Cv boot life expectancy
 

2 years ago I had both of my axles refurbished including new inner and outer boots and clamps. Yesterday while the car was on the lift for an oil change, my mechanic points out my drivers inner boot is completely broken open and nearly torn in half, with tons of grease having been flung all over the place. I know results may vary, but shouldn't those boots last longer than 2 years? My mechanic outsourced the work to someone who supposedly rebuilds axles all day long. I just think they should offer me some type of discount to fix it this time.

I think I am still on the origins boots, 15 years and 123k miles. They still look good ;) two years seems extremely short.

Use OEM Porsche boots and don't put too much grease in. Also it is very important that the clamps are installed correctly and that there is absolutely no grease between boot and the lip where the boot is clamped on. To me mostely an installation problem.

any evidence that the boot was hit by something and torn apart?

It must have been hit by something. Two years is too short.

I understand what CV joints and boots do and why they are the way they are, but I hate them. Just seems like there should be a more simple, less problem prone design out there somewhere.
