Cost of Clutch and IMS replacement

I did a search and see scattered costs on a clutch and IMS replacement. I am trying to figure out what is a fair price.

My 04 Boxster S is at 103K still on the original clutch and IMS. Throwout bearing started making noise 2 weeks ago and I figured its time to replace the clutch and do the IMS as well.

Needless to say I called a reputable indy shop and they wanted pretty close to 6k for the work. I am going to call around and shop this a but not looking for the lowest price just something within reason vs me doing it myself.

Is 6k fair or is that way to high? Any input on a good indy shop in the Nassau County area of NY would be helpful as well.

It should be half the amount quoted.
Happy Boxcstering,

$6k for a clutch and the IMS sounds like a rip off. Must be some sort of NYC tax. :p Keep shopping.

Parts cost should be the same no matter where you go and the rest is labor. My indie charged me 8 hours labor at $85/hour to do the IMS and RMS. Clutch is already out so that should not add much in terms of labor. I got the LN single row bearing at $650 plus the RMS seal which was so little in cost I don't even remember.

I'd say anything more then $3k is too much.

JayG 03-01-2016 08:03 AM

$6k sounds way too high.

It does depend on what IMSB replacement as well but still way too high

bobbeck 03-01-2016 08:45 AM

Just under $2,000 for clutch, flywheel and IMSB in Delaware a year ago.

njbray 03-01-2016 08:57 AM

I payed $3,400. for IMS, new clutch, waterpump, (incl. oil & coolant).
$6000. sounds crazy!

Jgkram 03-01-2016 11:36 AM

I just had the clutch and single row pro bearing installed for half that amount. I don't mind giving a shameless shout out to the indy shop I used in Raleigh (Flat Six Preservation). They were outstanding!

Myoung73 03-01-2016 12:45 PM

6K is insane. Paid about $3500 for clutch and DOF IMSB (DOF kit was a bit more expensive than non DOF I think - $895 for the part). bobbeck seems like he got a great deal though!

Retroman1969 03-01-2016 01:41 PM

Around here it's $1,300 to do clutch and IMS bearing, and $1,600 for IMS bearing if you're talking Tiptronic equipped car. You could have a low mileage engine installed for 6K! That's way too high for the work you described.

Here's the $6,000 plan:
1) Make an appointment with an indy at a Vacation spot between South Carolina and Florida.
2) Schedule a few days off In late March.
3) Get out of NY, drive down south avoiding I-95 (see the Appalachians.)
4) Pay ~$2,500 for the maintenance and enjoy a few days of vacation.

I should probably drive to OKC, next car due, instead of doing it myself!

tomonomics 03-01-2016 05:52 PM

Assuming the flywheel is shot as well, you are looking at ~$4000 in the NYC area from a certified LN IMS Retrofit independent mechanic.

AaronPDX 03-01-2016 08:56 PM

$6K is really high. I had it done, including a new dual mass flywheel (which is almost $1000), for $3800 last year. They used the LN bearing and did the standard clutch and RMS replacement.

Thankfully the previous owner just had the clutch/IMS (LN engineering) and flywheel replaced less than 1.5K miles before selling to me! Work was done at an independent shop.

Looks like they charged you full list on the parts

What oil and fuel additive were used???

asteroid hyalosis 03-02-2016 10:31 AM

They charged the old owner, not me. 5w40 Mobil 1 Synthetic was used, can probably Google "502" to find out what additive (but on my phone at the moment)

Don't most shops charge you msrp for parts?

I think the Fuel additive was a Ham and Cheese Sandwich with drink lunch combo.
The Oil additive was a KFC 3piece chicken dinner meal.

:D

Boxy_02 03-02-2016 01:24 PM

Dealer wanted $5-6k for IMS and RMS replacement.
I found and Indy who does the LN IMS retrofit, RMS, and AOS for $2,800 and it's a Tiptronic.

also why did the use M1 5W-40 rather than 0W-40?????

asteroid hyalosis 03-02-2016 03:26 PM

You want the shops number so you can ask them?

mordeeb 03-02-2016 04:13 PM

Last year for me I got all this done,

IMS bearing, clutch, oil change, sway bar bushing, gear oil, crankshaft seal-rear.

for $3,151.06. Just come to MA and save $3k lol.

The professionals that post here seem to think that the 0W- is not a good choice, as seen in the many "best oil" threads over the years.

JFP's posts here convinced me:

Not to throw fuel on the fire

100's of thousands of people run 0w-40 in their Porsche as recomended
I'm not an engineer, but it would seem that having an oil that acts thinner would be better for startup.

BTW, that there is over 6 years old and as many have stated, the oil companies reformulate their product from time to time, so it is highly likely that the products have changed since 2009

At the end of the day, drink whatever flavor Kool-Aid you like

There are plenty of oil threads over the years and plenty of other forum's where it is discussed. I'm not sayin' "Thou shalt not use M1 0W-40." Just that in many opinions, it is not the best choice. It's what I put in my '01 a couple months ago. My '99s are running Castrol Edge 5W-50 and 10W-40. -Good sale price on all three and for my old, fully depreciated Boxsters, I really don't care that much.

For me, Kool-Aid is way too sweet and packed with unhealthy ingredients that are more about marketing than providing anything useful to your body. /Avoid.
