986 Boxster s 6 speed - Fit detent or not?
 

I have recently purchased but not yet collected a 2003 Boxster s. I am aware that these boxes can develop a syncro issue with second gear. The box on the car I will be collecting soon is fine.

Should I fit the detent as recommended when you google the issue?
Anyone have any experience of doing the job?

No need to do this proactively. If your gearbox shifts normally, go drive!

My 2000S developed the 2nd gear problems a few years ago. I replaced the detent and have been fine since.

I fitted one of these almost 2 years ago.
I had a mild crunching on my initial 1-2 shift of the day with a cold transmission. I have a feeling it was more gear clash than anything else because of cold fluid, but I digress.
Since then, no more of that silliness after putting in the GBox detent.
A bit of a PITA to get at, but doable with the transmission in the car.

I did mine with the tranny in the car.

It's like this....
You look at where its at and say "No Way!"
An hour later you're done!

If you have no 2nd gear problems, the old(cheaper) design may be O.K.????

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. God knows there'll be lots of other stuff to fix!

Problem is that the 2nd gear pop-out is a miles/use related defect. Once it starts poping out of 2nd gear ,there is very little chance you'll be able to solve the problem with just an external detent. So it is a prudent preventative measure if you plan to keep the car beyond 100K miles?
Perhaps others have an alternative solution? Dismantling and repairing a 6 speed is a complex task requiring special tools and skills.Very expensive.
