Does anyone ever try to shift to 7th?

Lately folks have gone nuts on the commute to work. My goal is to drive with traffic, but in an open space between clusters. Lately the clusters, mainly groups of pickup trucks has increased velocity markedly. Anybody else looking for 7th gear?

I rarely get into 6th unless I am doing 200 km/h +

Though driving other vehicles I sometimes look for 6th when they only have 5

You must be in Texas James.
In my S rolling on the throttle in 6th quickly gets me from 75 to 90. At that speed any cluster I pass (I drive in a similar manner to you) will be in the rear mirror quickly. For the stubborn quicker traffic I may push the car a little farther but the S doesn't run out of juice at any speed I've had the guts to travel at.

My 2000S is stock full of down low torque and so darned quiet that I catch myself sometimes running in a gear like 4th or 5th when I should be in 3rd!
Lucky Germans can run back and forth between 5th and 6th all day.

When I'm on the interstate I wish at times I had a 7th gear. Cruising at 2700rpm would be better than 3400.
On the race track, I've never gotten out of 5th. I was hoping to get to 6th at KS Spdwy last fall, but that got cut short with the track cancelling the DE after 3 sessions. My goal this yr is 6th gear on the back straight at COTA.

I use 7th gear all the time in my 991 on the highway. Amazing how a 430 HP car, at 75 MPH, can be turning about 2,100 RPM, and get over 30 MPGs. Last summer, I proudly used the low emitting high fuel economy lanes on the highways near Nashville.

Does anyone ever try to shift into Race gear? It's one up from 5th (non-S) /6th (S). Right?

I try and find 6th all the time... My Audi is a 6 speed manual and I always skip 5th.

Jeez the power band is from ~4000 - 7000 rpm so doing 100mph in 5th is in band on a 6 speed.
For fuel economy when cruising you could do 6th at 60mph but downshift to 5 or 4 when there are hills or you need to do some passing.

Getting up to speed quickly, going through the gears, I typically end up in 4th gear at about 5k rpm and 80 mph. At that point, I'm usually pacing the fast lane, and I'll pop it from 4th to 6th.

I got into the habit from going from 4th to 6th in my 996. I often find myself wanting to do the same in the Boxster!
