05 997 s ims ?

looking at a nice 05 997 S to purchase . I read somewhere that all the S models had the bigger bearing but i am not sure if this is true and the PPI will not help me with this either . anyone with any info on this ? i know 05 is a funky year for the bearings , could use some help before I sign away .

An 05 car may or may not have the non serviceable IMS bearing. Unfortunately, the only way to know which one is in the car is to take it apart and look. All the other methods (VIN #, build dates, etc.) have proven useless.

Would you buy an 05 997 S or pass ? with a clean PPI .

Jfp, so with the 05s, it's impossible to determine unless you pull the motor and separate the trans in order to see the flange?

So you either have a single row (worst bearing but replaceable) or a best bearing (and still replaceable in theory but at twice the cost). How would you feel if you bought the car, decided you really wanted to do the IMS, got the transmission off and discovered it was the one that took a $$$ case split to do?

Depends on the price of the car, your ability to pay $3-6k more, and your risk tolerance.

The car has 47k on the clock , would prefer the big bearing , seems to be very few problems with them . the car is priced right but a bearing and clutch will negate that quickly .

I waited 5 years to replace my bearing on my 03 S and it was in good condition .

Actually, you want to look at the flange center bolt:

If the nut on the center bolt is 22MM, it is the non serviceable bearing, which is the only one that used that size center bolt.

Good to know. I'm not taking a chance on an 05.
