Abandoned 356 spotted in rural Oklahoma.

A friend sent this pic he took somewhere between Guthrie and Cashion out in the boondocks.
Hard to tell details from the pic. Any clues standing out to anyone? Looks like a 356 hardtop that was green and has had stripes and a number on it at some point a long time ago.

He said the rest of the field around the barn was scattered with derelict VWs.
I'm going to have him show me exactly where he saw it sometime this week and see what we have here.

I found one working with Direct TV in the middle of nowhere... Took this artsy photo through an old trucks back window.http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...3d3f7f261a.jpg

Best of luck. I'm curious as to the outcome.

Grow that Red Green beard out a bit more wizardly like, and maybe you can make some sort of Magnus Walker outlaw duct tape edition from that there 356. :D

Thanks! :)
LOL, I have the urge to duct tape a K-car engine into it I don't know why.

Duct tape and K-car engines.

The 356 actually looks to be in decent shape based on the photo. I'll be real curious to hear about what you can find out. Based on the strip and number it maybe it has some interesting racing history.

You have to admit they go well together! ;)

If I got my hands on something like this, it would be refurbished (not restored) back to an original state. It might even be fun to restore the racing graphics to it just for extra historical interest.

Unfortunately with things like this, you often get:
"It's been sitting out there for 47 years, but I'm still gonna do somethin' with it someday".

Or

"I've seen Barrett Jackson, I knowed whut it's wuuurrrrth! Ain't takin' less than $150,000 for it!"

I'm hoping for: "my husband collected all that junk! Take what you want."

Maybe we should 'crowd fund' (986 forum only) its purchase and restoration. Then send it to an auction and (hopefully) make a nice profit!:)

I'd be up for that! :D
And have the satisfaction of "saving another one".

While you're at it, check on the VW bus, maybe we can restore it to provide a tow vehicle. :D

You never know and sometimes the chase for a given cars can take years. Alot of times it takes the owner passing and the wife/famly just wanting to get rid of the junk. If you can get it for the right price you might be able to flip it to someone that can restore it properly.

K-car engine - only if it's one of those turbo jobs. What was it, a 2.2l intercooled turbo that put out about 150 hp. Duct tape the blow off valve shut and that could get interesting.

Retroman1969 01-19-2016 05:34 PM

In college I had a new Lebaron 2.2 Turbo Coupe. :)
A noisy, rough, lumpy thing, but man would it move! Had acres of turbo lag, but once it kicked in, it would snap your neck!
The temptation to keep the 356 would be strong, but yeah, it would take many years for me to fully restore it, so I'd consider finding a serious collector to sell it to.
If that VW Type 2 was a split window, it would likely be worth almost as much in that condition as that Porsche is in that condition. ;)
