Can you transfer the guts of a key to a new fob??

My lock/unlock button is getting a little worse for wear (see pic). I see the day where it is going to detach itself from the keyfob, so, instead of going through the very costly replacement key process, is it possible to buy a "blank" fob and just transfer the innards from the old to the new???

Yes you can. Make sure you keep the tiny immobilizer pill and transfer that too.

I just bought the key below from someone on Fleabay for $30. He sold his Boxster, and found his extra key that he never used. The buttons on my key are worn now...not as bad as yours, but will get like that I'm sure eventually. Will just move all the innards to the new key and hope it works.

You're right...the 2 different 997 style keys only have 2 buttons.

Open the remote portion. You'll see a tab with a spring holding the blade in.
You hold down the tab and pull the blade out.

Yes, thank you! I took my key fob apart and quickly realized how easy it was to remove.

Do not forget to transfer the chip as well.

If it's just the buttons worn, you can simply replace the button side, nothing to "transfer."

my wife's S key is broken. the circuit board is cracked.

i have a spare second key from my base box. what if i took the circuit board out and installed it on my wife's key. could i then just have the stealership reprogram the circuit board to my wife's boxster?

do you think that would work?

Does this imply that one key fits all Boxsters. I have only one key and would like to have a back up. My current key does not unlock the doors or set any alarm, this feature is not important to me.

No because in order for dealer to program the key they need the code which you won't have. Only new keys from the dealer come with it.
