986 shift knob and boot replacement
Anyone have a guide or how to video on replacing the shift knob and boot for a 986 Boxster? Thanks.

just lift around the base with a screw driver - carefully by where the clips are, it just pops up. I think there are like 6 of them. Then yank the knob off, straight up. whole assembly comes right off. pretty simple....

Also be aware that some of the shift knobs (the optional ones with the carbon fiber and aluminum knobs) are held on to the shaft with a single Allen head bolt. I about popped a nut once trying to pull one off. A closer inspection revealed the bolt.
Also - take heed to what Porsche9 says about smacking yourself. Ask me how I know... :D |
If you twist the knob side to side a few times with moderate pressure, it will come off the shaft much easier. ;)

If it is tight, there is a way of using two screwdrivers to pull it up. Place the shaft of each screwdriver on each side under the knob - horizontal. Have one handle on one side and the other on the other side. Then with even pressure, pull up. I hope this makes sense. After reading it I am confused.

Thanks for the responses...and the laughs. Great advice. I'll be sure to let you know if I knock myself out...after I regain consciousness.
