Hi everyone. Yesterday I got an oil change and now I have a leak. I was also leaking prior to the oil change but from a different location.

Right now the leak is from the oil drain plug. I checked and it pretty tight. It was not leaking from there prior to oil change.

My leak precious to oil change was from the oil filter canister. For the oil change I bought a brand new canister. In the second image you can see some oil residue on and around it just a few hours after replacing.

Any ideas what the cause can be?

You need to upload your pics versus attaching them.

Did you use a new crush washer on the drain plug and torque it to spec?

How many miles on the motor?

It is possible that the drain plug is cracked. In my experience a correctly torqued drain plug with an old crush washer will still not come anywhere close to leaking.

I had the magnetic LN drain plug and over-torquing it left a non-visible crack and it resulted in a leak of about a drop of oil/30 seconds.

I did not replace the crusher ring. Motor at 96k mi
I had a shop do the oil change so I'll go back and have them check for cracks.

I believe the stock plug is torqued to +/- 37 and the LN plug is +/- 19.

I'm assuming you correctly replaced the rubber gasket on the housing? If it's coming from the drain plug, it's either a bad plug or its not correctly torqued. If you have the magnetic drain plug and you used the same torque as the factory plug, you destroyed your plug.

Just fyi, the factory drain plug will run you about 6 bucks and if you're ordering one get about 10 crush washers. No reason not to replace that every time.

I'ts the original drain plug so I assume it could be bad at this point, and the mechanic maybe over-tourqed. I ordered a new plug and crusher ring BUT......
Is it possible to change the plug wihtout draining the oil?

Law of gravity and all.

I overfilled mine over the summer. Pull the plug, drain into a clean container. Change the plug and take a minute to put the oil back in. Very easy. Take you only a few minutes.

I too had just changed the oil when I cracked the drain plug. Certainly did not drain all of the oil. If you're quick, you loose about 1/4 cup oil. If you're slow, you have a lot to clean up. Im sure there is a variant of my technique involving digits of your non-unscrewing hand that could bring that 1/4 cup even lower.

Sorry for the hijack, but what is the torque for a magnetic drain plug? I bought one off a member here a few years back.

And I would have a little bit of a concern if you had a shop change the oil and now you have a leak from the plug. This should have been checked before your car left the shop. If you take it back I'd be worried that they'll just torque it down hard and possible damage the plug or worse yet, strip the threads in your oil pan.

UPDATE

replaced the oil drain plug with a replacement from pelican parts. Also replaced the crusher ring. Once complete, it was determined that the ring was the culprit. Hanging on to my original drain plug to use next time.

No more oil leaks
