I have to say, I drove a 2004 Carrera the other day and it knocks the socks off my boxster s. I just can't justify the $$. Bang for your buck, boxster wins hands down.

My friend is bouncing back and forth between a boxster s and 996 purchase. He is an air cooled 911 guy and never thought much of the Boxsters or any water pampers. He picked mine up and drove it from PA to MA and love the handling. As.a result, he is now actively looking. I am curious Bryanf, when you wrote the 996 knocked the socks off the boxster s, did you mean in every area, 0-60, top speed, other? It would help him to get some opinions. I had a 77 911 C3.0 which I enjoyed but I knew when I got back in I wanted something a bit more refined and a convertible. So far, the 2000 s has been awesome. No complaints, I feel very, very lucky to have it as a toy.

Well I have both a 04 986 S and a 04 996 Targa.
Both are great cars. While I like the extra 60 or so HP in the 996, I prefer to drive the Boxster. I find it more fun to drive, handles better and hell, nothing beats a ragtop in San Diego. When I do back road drives with the local PCA club, I have no problem keeping up with and sometimes crawling up the ass of 911's. Sure on the straights, they pull away, but as soon as we get into the twisties, my little Boxster shines |
Ditto, I also own both, a 996 Millennium and a Boxster S, the Boxster is just more "fun", plus it's a convertible.., the Boxster S is IMO, the best sports car ever made!

The maint risk/expense is the same which leaves the Boxster/Cayman as the better buy. Just sold my 996 C4 and now hunting for as new as I can afford Cayman S.

Well to be fair the main appeal of the 911 I hear from owners isn't the larger power figure, they actually prefer the greater challenge that rear engine provides.
They treat rear engine vs mid like automatic vs manual. |

I`m slowly making my way down the Porsche chassis re. engine location. My first was a 944S, currently a 986 so I guess a 911 is in my future.:cool:

The newer 911's (996 and newer) have far less oversteer. Porsche did changes to the suspension design and they are much better behaved with and without PSM Yes, the lawn mower engined (air cooled) ones do rotate easily if you lift the gas in a turn, the newer ones have far less tendency to do that. In any case, if t does start to come around, just stomp on the gas and it straightens out |
So rear end engine cars are more difficult to drive than mid engine cars? LOL.
Ever driven a mid and rear engine car without spability management systems? Maybe some should give those 911 big ball guys a 914/6 for a test drive on a rainy race track. :D So at the end of the day, the Porsche marketing department has done a really good job by classifying the segments and get a maximum roi. ;) Regards, Markus |

I bought a Base Boxster because I could not afford the S let alone a 911. ;)
