Need spinlocks?
I scored a great deal on a hardtop locally the other day but it came, of course, without spinlocks. I shopped around and found that suncoast probably had the best price for these rediculously priced parts but the shipping was outrageous! So I called my local Porsche dealer and he had them for $55 Canadian each (about $42 US). So, at least for my Canadian friends, if you're looking for these parts, you needn't go further than the dealer. This has to be a first!

I nominated these parts for the "most over-priced" Porsche parts thread. I think full price for 2 allen screws and 2 spin locks is +/- $150.00. Another member suggested that it might have cost $3.00 per car to install these during manufacture on all of the cars. We all save money when and where we can, including Porsche.

Look at your spinlock closely and think about the machining it took to make it.
Don't really think they are just stamped out |
A while back there was a genuine Porsche wood shipping crate for Boxster hardtop for sale on eBay. Hilariously, the seller wouldn't ship it.
Noting several current ads here by folks seeking hardtops, I'd suggest that in the long run you're going to drive your car to pick it up. These things are more than 4 feet wide and more than 4 feet long, so pickup or SUV transport will be complicated. Easiest, safest way to retrieve one is mounted to your Boxster IMHO. So, while you're waiting for the right deal, be ready with spinlocks already installed. |

Agreed
that they are machined and likely cost more than $3 but still not expensive enough to justify not installing them on all of the 160,000 986 Boxsters built. Until 2003, all Boxsters came with rear defroster wiring and a switch that would only be used with a hardtop. And apparently 996 cabrios used different mounting hardware, but on that model the hardware was installed on every one when built, whether or not it had a hardtop.

New art, whered you find your hard top and did you get a good price? Ive been looking

Right place, right time. I regularly check kijiji with the keyword boxster, just looking for parts or deals. Caught this one and texted him right away. I thought it might be nice for spring/fall and track days. If I don't use it, I'll put it up for sale next fall.

BTW, I transported the top on top of my Kia rondo. It was wider than the roof of the Kia so I wrapped it up and strapped it on. No problem!

I found one out of Orange County, CA that was the right color and came with a stand, cover and the spin locks. Plus the guy was able to drive it out to Arizona. It wasn't cheap but it was cheaper then getting one that I had to have shipped and then painted to match. All in it was worth it. I love the look and use it during our hot summers. With the hardtop on the car garners a lot of unsolicited positive comments from strangers.

Your red on red looks classy! I have a seal grey that will go on my silver car. I don't plan on painting it. I'll post a pic when I receive the spinlocks.

You're right
