How do you clean the inside of your windshield?

Mine was getting hazy, I suppose from the dash and interior off-gassing in the afternoon heat? Anyway, it proved resistant to normal cleaning with typical glass cleaner, just leaving streaks. Eventually I got most of the haze gone, but it required a lot of polishing. Is there a better way?

dxterity 09-28-2015 03:00 PM

I use dry newspaper. Works like a charm. Use regular glass cleaner and scrunched up newspaper, but replace the newspaper when it gets saturated or else it will streak like regular cloths.

Joe B 09-28-2015 03:12 PM

I've tried the newspaper and I have better luck with clean terrycloth towels and Windex. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 cleanings to get all the crap off.

pony13ca 09-28-2015 03:21 PM

I used a piece of clay bar on mine. What it took of the window was incredible. Now it is much easier to clean with a terrycloth and streak free Window cleaner. I will do that once or twice a year now.

That stuff works great.
I get 4 or 5 cans when it goes on sale.

Stoner Invisible Glass Reach & Clean Tool

I use this thing for the inside of the windshield. It makes it super easy to get down by the dash. For the outside a glass cleaner micro fiber cloth with some invisible glass cleaner followed by a thicker drying micro fiber cloth.

bglz42 09-29-2015 11:04 AM

+1 on that reach & Clean tool. I have had one for years...

mump 09-29-2015 11:35 AM

Autozone had $5.00 off if you buy the Stoner tool and invisible glass last week. I picked it up and must say, I am impressed.

Rain X makes a product to prevent fogging. I haven't tried it though.
Last night I polished the glass with my Porter Cable and Griot's Garage glass polishing pad and their glass polish. That was nearly 10 years worth of pollution, grit and stains that were gone in 10 minutes.

RandallNeighbour 09-29-2015 11:37 AM

Perfectlap, you polished the inside of the window or the outside?

Do you need any sealant after that?

outside. But I was tempted to hand apply the polish to the inside. Perhaps there's pollution on the inside as well.

Nope. I presume they added some sealing additives to the polish itself.

wish you could polish off sandblasting :P

Pdwight 09-29-2015 06:13 PM

Denatured Alcohol

I tried this and had pretty good luck with a microfibre towel, then I cleaned it with Invisible Glass and still this is a ongoing struggle...for some reason my E36 seems to be worse than my Boxster (and that windshield is only 3 years old)

Yes, they have a cleaner for Automotive glass.

njbray 09-30-2015 08:20 AM

I had a thin film all over my car last week - I think I had been behind a car on the freeway that was leaking coolant! I had to clay bar the car so I thought I would clay bar the windscreen & windows too - It made a BIG difference, a lot of muck came of the windscreen so I did it twice and then polished with Invis. Glass.
Cleaning the inside is easier if you sit in the passenger seat, again I use Invisible Glass, takes a couple of goes - I guess a lot of grease comes out of our mouths when we breath!

Love the guy's comment, "Because we're all OCD, watching these videos." How true.

Just bought my Stoner tool from Amazon. Love the name. Had to have one.

Finnegan 10-01-2015 08:21 AM

I'm still waiting for nanites to do this work for me!

What year is your E36? I have a '95.

mistermac99 10-04-2015 03:24 AM

I use newspaper to clean all glass. Cars and home. I get a pump spray bottle, add a small amount of dish detergent, then the rest water. Spray a good amount on the glass and clean with newspaper.
After cleaning, I use a microfiber towel to remove any leftover film.
This technique works well for me, and is very cheap.

Available in India?

Try a micro fiber cloth.

husker boxster 07-06-2018 09:52 PM

I've found the Mr Clean Magic Eraser + your fav window cleaner works fantastic on cutting the inside windshield haze. Follow it up with a micro fiber towel to make it shine.

Cunningr 07-07-2018 12:07 AM

In the super market here they sell a cloth specific for window cleaning, almost like a micro fiber towel, and I use the RainX window cleaner no ammonia in it.

Outside about 2 times a year I take a clean clay bar and clay it like the paint but no wax lol.

Finnegan 07-10-2018 11:42 AM

These work remarkably well on the inside of the windshield:

Mr Flat Six 07-10-2018 12:46 PM

I work professionally as a car detailer and windows are definitely annoying. An easy and simple way is to use one towel as a cleaning towel and another towel as a drying towel in a way. Make sure the cleaning towel does not get too saturated though or else it wont work as well. This will work well with pretty much any towel. Paper, microfiber, waffle weave, newspaper, etc. Its not the best method but its very efficient when you get it right and will get your windows 95% clean and streak free.

particlewave 07-10-2018 01:48 PM

I started my own photocopier repair business when I was 19. I did that for about 8 years.
Most "repairs" actually just involved cleaning due to dirty optics.
After trying many different products and techniques, this method is what works best:

1) clean thoroughly with a paper towel saturated with rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or grime.
2) quick wipe down with a wet towel or cloth to remove any residue and to wet the glass.
3) buff dry with a clean, dry towel to remove/prevent streaks (terrycloth towel or rag works best).

Most glass cleaning products will leave streaks or residue that may take a week or two to show up, especially ammonia based.
The above method works great every time and will leave the glass clear and streak free. ;)
