How does my check engine light know?

For the second time since I've owned my boxster, the check engine light came on just days before my appointment at the smog station for registration..so weird. I have an appointment this Wednesday for smog check and the light came on today. Last time it came on a few days before my test for a lazy cat converter hope it's the same code this time.

That what you get for making an appointment

Just drive around and just pull into one at random
That way the car wont know its getting something shoved up its tailpipe

That'll do it. They hate paid transportation. Particularly now that you don't even know what's on their record with no certification. Also their boss is a mad man.

Just happened to me too. I got about a week's notice. Required two pre-cat O2 sensors. Got the CEL cleared the morning of the last day for inspection. Passed.

Cool diesil

Your Boxster has the earlier software which stops you taking it to the test station before you make some adjustments manually. On my car there is a switch under the dash to change to pass settings.

The modern VW group cars can also detect smog tests, so why not ours?

Well, at least yours is straightforward with you. Mine is having a cold war with me right now. Smog is due, I've been driving the car for more than 2000 miles since my last secondary air injection code reset, it hasn't triggered any other lights so far, but it won't set the Catalyst monitor to Ready either.
