Well, I'd like to thank everyone for all the excellent advice in this post. I spent the day today clay-barring (that may or may not be the correct terminology) my boxster today and it looks and feels awesome. I'm so happy with the results. It's not perfect but it's way better than it was before. After spending years sitting in a garage, I'm sure there's been years of build-up dirt in the paint. I'll have to do another treatment in the spring.

For home use, the dual action polisher from Harbor freight is pretty good and around $50. Its basicially a clone of the Portacable one

totally agree, I bought one and it is fine for home use on a few cars

Harbor Freight also stock the polishing and finishing pads in store for about $6. Convenient if you need them right away. Harbor Freight also carry a 750W inverter for about $40. I picked up a cheap battery at Wal-Mart (they pay $12 for your old battery) to hook up the inverter to my Porter Cable 7424. I decided to bring the PC with me when I bought the battery to make sure I wasn't getting a dud. so I pulled in the back where no one parks and did about an hour of paint correction right there. :)
car was nice and shiny for my trip the next morning. |
