IMS check possible before purchase?
Hi everyone,
I'm in the market for a 987 and I'm wondering about the how does one go about having the IMS checked? Is it even possible? Would the engine make any sound that would give some warning if the ims is worn? I had 1988 Carrerra and moved up to a 1997 Carrera and had to sell it for a house purchase. I have been Porscheless for nine months and I'm dying to get another sports car. |
You should do a search and you will find your answer
Since this is you first post, you get a pass The only real way to check the IMSB is to drop the transmission and physically check the IMSB If the engine is making a sound like marbles, run away fast as it has major problems There really is no audible warning, once you can hear it it is too late If you find a serialized LN label on the door jamb, the IMSB was replace with a LN Engineering IMSB If you are super lucky, you might find a Flat 6 Innovations sticker and in that case you have an upgraded engine You can also look through any service records early 987s have a non serviceable IMSB, you have to split the case to replace it, but it is a larger stronger one, so the likelihood of a problem is much lower do some searching and you will find additional information Good luck in your search |
What year 987? 987.2's don't have an IMS.

You might stretch your budget and get one without an IMS if it concerns you. I made a conscious decision not to worry about it, but it would be great if the issue wasn't there.
