Maintenance advise
 

Hello guys, I recently purchased a 2001 Boxster for about half of what they are presently going for. It has 120k mi. No spring chicken. I do have a oil leak on the passenger side of the car. Planning on having the vehicle completely gone through in order to make it a daily driver. Please give me some must do's in order to get it where it needs to be. Aside from the oil leak seems to run well.

It's not about maintaining it, it's really about keeping it as perfect as possible is what I've learned.

AOS
All fluids, brake / coolant / oil.
Inspect oil filter for any debris
IMS been done?
Bearings
Is that an oil leak or shift lever leak?
Suspension bushings and parts tight?
Clean throttle body
Plugs / coil packs.
Water pump
Serp belt

That's the starters....

No two cars are alike or have been treated the same. Your best bet is to spend a lot of time reading here and checking things off your list as you can.

FWIW the way I think

Always spend money on core parts of the car before you do any cosmetic add ons.

AOS

IMS

Oil change

Transmission oil change

Water Pump thermostat and hoses

Suspension components (trailing arms , tie rod ends stc

Simple things like keep it clean and lubricated...start a spreadsheet on your car to keep up with what you have done

You can look for he leak yourself. Pull your passenger side rear tire, remove the access panel in the wheel well and look where the coil packs for your spark plugs are. Leaking plug tubes (or tube O-rings) are comong wear items.

I take the simple "if its not broken, why fix it approach", so I'd do a major service and then drive the crap out of it.

Find the right mechanic, then take his advice. Good ones are too busy to need more work so they tend to sell less. The 90k service is a good place to start plus brakes, tires, alignment. You can go broke doing PM, I've done more than I should over my 50+ year ownership career.

We just bought an '01 Base with 112K on it a couple months ago and had a similar oil leak. We took to the local dealer for an inspection and they found that the oil/air separator had gone bad. Typical for this kind of milage and it cost us $300 for parts and labor. No more problems.

Get and idea of what's needed from you mechanic.. Some things if you have some skills you can do yourself, other maybe a pro should do. Getting a pro to do it all can be wallet punishing.

There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche!
