Speaking of dealers - this morning my away-at-college son took his 2003 BMW X5 with 90K miles to the dealer to have the automatic transmission checked (did not downshift from a higher gear when he came to a stop one time last week - been fine since - figured he'd have it checked before he drove 300 miles home tomorrow).

The dealer emailed me the inspection report recommending $12,747.80 in repairs including $7,821.53 for a brand new factory transmission. Replacing 6 spark plugs was only $480.24.

I politely declined.

What's not to like about dealers?
