I assume if they changed/improved it, they would have a different part number for it. I'll find out if my old arms have the same part number as the new ones once I install them, and probably can answer your question then.

From my research, many people recommend getting the 987 arms, but no one explains why they are better than the 986 arms. They do cost more from what I've seen, though.
