Help! Sound from right wheel well or under right dash - 986 Forum - The Community for Porsche Boxster & Cayman Owners

Guys;

Before I take it in to the Porsche dealership; I am getting a "rrrrrrrrrr" noise that appears to come from the right wheel well or maybe the right side of the dash when I am in 2nd or 3rd gear between 2600 and 3200 rpm and only if the gas is being pressed and clutch engaged. If I i come off the gas or disengage clutch the sound stops...I can rev the motor up thru those rpms and get no sound. My normal mechanic inspected and took apart the right front wheel and said bearings, brakes and everything looked fine.

I am going to take it to the dealer and see if they can do some diagnostics to better pin point what is causing it.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Are you sure it is coming from the front? It kinda sounds like the symptoms of a failing motor mount.

Definitely from the front, not just me but my mechanic, his helper, my son , my wife all from the front.

Could it be my front hood out of alignment? My front hood does not close well or easily and right before the sound started the wife was going to meet me at daughters soccer game and we would leave on a overnight right after the game while my son drove my daughter home. The wife had put stuff in the front but could not get it all the way down closed...so she still drove it over to the soccer field....7 miles with the hood only closed to the first latch.

OK; taped up the front hood seems and took for a drive....the noise is still there. I thik more and more the sound is coming from the passenger side AC vent. What could cause it there?

Is the sound still there after you turn off the AC? If the sound disappears, it could be refrigerant passing through the expansion valve.

Ok; after research and some info from another forum site I put tape across the gas cap vent to the right of the door and put two small nail holes in it to let it still vent and.....the sound is gone.

Did you get any CEL?

Right front - dash side - behind the vent is a small fan motor with a sensor for the automatic climate control.

Is this sound similar to blowing across a Coke bottle? I have this at about 25-30 mph, changed the fuel line vent valve and... no change. Don't know what it is. Guess I'll try tape, it's cheaper! What article did you see for the tape experiment?

Yes: it is just like blowing across a coke bottle; usually at slow speeds, 2nd or 3rd gear at 2600 to 3400 RPMs and only if your applying gas. I found a couple of threads here and at ReenTech that addressed "Gsd Cap Noise". My vent is to the right of the gas cap door when it is open...there is a gap that shows the rest of the fill compartment. Some stuck a sponge in...I went with a piece of duct tape with a couple of small nail holes I put in so there is some venting. The correct solution is to replace a control valve for the charcoal filter but i understand that to cost about $500. I'll stick with the tape solution for now.
