Please help

when I start my 986 and take off after a few seconds, if I press on the gas it wants to hesitate and hold back for a second or so, during this time I hear a popping from the intake on the left hand side vent, any ideas

1) Coil packs (6 off) mounted at each spark plug - cracks / heat damage cause sparks to short to ground when wet.

2) Vacuum leaks are notoriously difficult to track down - best left to good Porsche workshop.

Start with #1 - coil packs much easier to see or replace.

Coil pack - ignition coils.

Vaccum leak. There are different ways. Easiest is a start pilot spray. If you spray it on a leak in the intake area in general the rpms of the engine raise.

Be careful and don't spray starter spray on hot engine parts.

There might be other leaks. So one additional check could be to open the oil cap when the engine is on idle. If the ilde gets rougher and again gets smooth if you put the oil cap again on, than evereything seems to be OK at first sight. Also the throttle response should be worse with the oil cap off.

If the idle doesn't change / doesn't get rough this wlll be a sign of a vacuum leak.

At a workshop you can do a professional vaccum leak test. By doing this you can test the complete engine.

It's best to disconnect the negative battery terminal any time you're unplugging an electronic item from our cars. Certainly won't hurt!

So an update from me on this one, left the battery connected, removed the MAF sensor from the manifold with the wiring still connected, sprayed electrical cleaner on all the contacts and left to dry for approx 10 mins, fitted back into the manifold and my issue has gone.

Thanks to all for the replies

Scott
