Cel p0455
 

The dreadful CEL popped up on my 02S. I've replaced the cap which I ordered through Pelican. CEL came back on a week later. I've reset the code a couple more times and it keeps coming back after a few days of driving.

I took it in to two independent shops to troubleshoot the Evap leak. One Indy is a Porsche specialist and could not find any leak. The other Indy is a Smog specialist. They did a smoke test through the system and could not detect a leak. He reset the Code and replaced with aftermarket cap just to try again. I drove it around and within 6 miles of driving the CEL came back.

I bought another cap OEM from the dealer. CEL did not come on yet but it looks like it will in a matter of driving time. I drove it for over 20 miles at various speeds trying to cycle the OBD. I hooked up my Durametric and checked the OBD readiness status and EVAP status shows as Fail even though the CEL did not come on yet.

At this point I don't know what to do and I need to Smog the car for registration. Any advise would be helpful if anyone have any advise on this.

A couple of points: These cars hate aftermarket gas caps, period. Secondly, the way that the EVAP system works can allow the car to leak vacuum through the EVAP system itself, with no observable leaks for a smoke test to pick up unless you really know what you are looking for.

Keep running the car and see if the CEL comes back; if it does, you are going to need to start checking each component in the EVAP system to make sure the valves open and close correctly, as well as looking for cracked hoses under the passenger's side front fender. As this is a fairly common problem, start searching for EVAP system problems and read up on what others have found.

P0455 Fuel Tank Ventilation System (Major Leak) - Below Lower Limit Potential causes: - Tank cap missing or O-ring bad or missing. - Ventilation lines detached from EVAP canister. - Ventilation line detached from tank. - Ventilation lines detached from operating vent valve. - Ventilation line detached from fuel tank vent valve. - Break in ventilation lines.

I haven't been able to dig deeper because i'm not sure exactly where the bolds above are located. Does your car smell like fuel? Mine does a little bit, i'm sure I have a leak somewhere, but not sure where.

Yes I saw your thread. A smoke leak test was done to my car. No leaks and no smell of gas fumes.

Did they remove the passenger's side wheel and wheel well liner when they did the smoke test? If they didn't, they never looked at the EVAP system.

Yes they removed the wheel and liner.

Update: I threw in the towel and took it to the dealer. They performed a smoke test and determined these parts to be faulty/leaking so they replaced the following parts:
1. 996-201-221-07 ACTVD CARBN CO
2. 996-605-201-01 SHUT-OFF VALVE
3. 996-605-213-01 CARBON CONT VA
Codes were reset. After driving the car around for a few day (65 miles) the CEL came back on. P0455 and also a P0430. I'm almost certain these two are related.

I am bringing the car back to the dealer and need to be prepared with what they may claim.

Any advice ? Can an Evap leak cause the P0430? I'm also holding them responsible for the P0455 code.

Yes they replaced these parts. The CEL came back on a couple days later and they reset the codes again and this time it's been good.
