CV Joint boots cracked
While changing the oil this weekend, I noticed that the inner and outer boots were cracked on both shafts. There is no noise or any other issues. What are the chances that I only need the boots replaced/repacked or is it just best to have the entire shafts replaced?

When inner CVs come off with shaft you'll see if you need inners. Super cheap.
Then repack & boots all around. Easy. Outers are entire shaft only. |
I find it easier just to get a new unit , 300 cnd up here

Mine were cracked too, and no noise or anything. I just got the boots and repacked, and it's been fine for the past 2 years. My mistake was I put a little too much grease back in, so watch out for how much you're using.

I received (2) quotes today around $700. Both places stated 4-5 hours of labor, almost $200 in parts. Seems a tad high and was expecting $400-$500 tops.

Replaced the passenger side last fall. Parts from pelican really reasonable
Two clamps, boot and grease.. $87.16 for independent to install. Drivers side ok. Found when I had a tech inspection done by the dealer. Dealer suggested I not replace the boot but run it until the joint failed. $$$ |
I did all 4 boots and inner CV's this year myself, and it is a royal PITA, but not technically hard. Pelican kits, pretty cheap.
Easiest is dropping the skidplate, diagonal frames, and exhaust (cats or bypass pipes in my case), then unbolting the CV's at the tranny, tapping out the shafts from the carriers (one needed a bearing puller), and lots uf greasy fun R&R the joints and boots. |
I discovered a cracked inner boot on my S two winters back while poking about underneath... it looked like too much greasy fun for me, so my Indy did it when I shlepped the car out in the spring.
Less than $375; parts, labour & taxes and done in under 4 hours. It would have taken me an entire weekend, almost $100 in parts and CV grease, $100 in tools I didn't have, a few busted knuckles and an overflowing cuss jar. Wasn't gonna happen to save $175. I was a bit concerned about how long the boot had been damaged. My Indy found no grit in the CV itself and it's been fine for 2+ summers now, so I'm not expecting any trouble. |
