yes correct.. my bad the metal impeller is on the range rovers.. i think its composite not plastic on the 986 IIRC

though as an aside, the coolant is 5 year life, and for the cost of a water pump gasket, it's worth giving it a check with the coolant change

Ah grasshoppa!

I just managed to make it home without any power steering, alternator or engine cooling.

Out of curiosity, how long did you drove without the water pump..?

^^^^
That was the first thing I thought of too..... could be a recipe for future problems if he drove the car very far.

Pierburg equals Porsche OE. Pierburg makes the pumps for Porsche. Only difference is the box, the Pierburg I bought even had the Porsche part number cast and stamped into it. Same for the Wahler thermostat, but the Porsche part number casting was ground off of the housing.

Zerex G-05 coolant works well (as it does in all-aluminum Mercedes-Benz engines) if you don't want to shell out $35/gallon for Porsche coolant concentrate.

May as well change the thermo while you're in there since it's right next to the pump and you'll lose coolant anyway. Why do it later?

Avoid any pump with a metal impeller as that can cause engine block damage if/when the bearing goes out, while composite will not do that.

Same thing, I got a Pierburg WP and it has the Porsche part number on stamped on it.
I paid $190 for the WP, $52 for low temp thermo/housing/gasket & $3.50 for the WP gasket, no sales tax and free shippingh @ warehouse33auto.com

water pump life

Don't know about you guys but I've never had a Porsche water pump last more than 60k miles. I'm on my 4th Porsche water pump on my 01 Base Box. My 02 S is now showing signs of leaking. It only has 50k miles.

I don't work on my pcars...so, it's nothing that I've done.

What's your average Porsche water pump life time?

^^
That is a pretty good deal!
I already have the 101 project book, mine even has a personalized autograph from Wayne Dempsey

water pump bolts

The water pump bolts are different lengths. Make a template out of cardboard and push the bolts into it as you remove the bolts.

The two longer bolts go in the two holes on the WP that have the raised edge on the back to help line up the assembly in case you forget to mark them when you take them out.

I went with Pentosin engine coolant. They have it (or can get it) at O'Reilly Auto Parts. $12.99 for 1.5 liters. It's been a year or two since I did mine, so I don't remember how many I had to buy. I think I bought 6 and ended up with an extra one, but that was many beers ago.

ETA: And don't skimp and use tap water. Distilled water doesn't cost that much.

JayG 09-03-2015 01:26 PM

Wallyworld had distilled water for .88 / gal
Just bought 9 gal

6 to flush the system and 3 to mix
