Water pump went out today.
So, about a block from home the water pump went out. Temp gauge went up to the "0" on 180 and the warning light came on. I already ordered a new pump (one with the plastic impeller) but what kind of coolant do I need? Also, how much do I need? I was reading that you should clamp off the hoses or should I just drain it and start over.
Hopefully it will warm up here in Denver (its snowing right now) since I have to do it under the carport and not in a garage.

No noise as warning? When mine went I thought it was the damn IMS...terrible noise.
And SNOWING? Jeebus it's been basically early summer here for the past 1-2 months!

I just ordered up a water pump and all the extras from Sunset Porsche.
The Part No. for the coolant is 000-043-301-49, $27.99 per gallon. For my '01 S I order up 3 gallons.

I don't know if I would put another plastic impeller water pump back in. That is one of the reasons the stock pump fails. Just my two sense. I think the pierburg is the cheaper better alternative to the OEM pump and it has a composite impeller blade.

Yeah, we got about 4 inches last night...
I got a couple of squeals at start up, I thought it was the starter. Then it made a noise at the stop light before getting home and the heater temp went down but would get hot if you turned it up so I guess I got lucky.
I ordered a Pierburg off Pelican parts. I hope I did good?
Should be a interesting change out.

Inspect the old pump when you remove it to make sure the impellars didn't break down the last thing you want is pieces of the water pump stuck in the coolant passage ways. Can lead to cracked heads.

I just did mine too, even though it wasn't giving me trouble, just preventative. The old one I took out was a Pierburg also, still in great shape after 60k miles. Put a new Pierburg in, no problem with installation or part condition.

Just curious: what is the difference between "plastic" and "composite"?
And, sorry, it's "two cents," not "two sense."

I'd never thought of "sense". It could also be "two scents". No wonder English is hard to learn. And composite implies two or more materials used together (e.g. fiberglass), plastic implies a single material injection molded to make the part.

Well the pump got lost in the mail, or so they say. They said they sent out another one yesterday so this will put me about a week of not driving the boxster. At least the weather sucks so its not as bad.

I put Pentofrost in mine. Good stuff. Total capacity was 6 gallons as I recall?
Drain it. Change it. Do brake fluid while you're at it.

I went from both the cabin and from under, I need to get better jacks. Using the jacking points I couldn't get the car up enough to get the jackstands in so I slid my ramps under the tires and could not get them all the way to the top. (didn't want to drive it with the pump out)
