Best current setup for Double Din conversion?

I read older threads showing the option of the $160 eBay kit or piece it together for $100ish.

BUT, what's the best DD head unit out there for the money? Wanting DVD but Nav isn't important. I'll want to hack it to play in motion for my Son to watch when he's with me.

Also, seems like it's a 2-3 hour install for the average guy?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure if this would be what you're looking for, but it sure looks nice!

I did see that, but I like the idea of a $250 DD and $100 kit upgrade.

I wouldn't use the iPad for anything other than what the new app radios can do.

So far, thinking Kenwood DDX372BT

If you go with an Apple tablet, you'll need to add a monthly cellular plan just to use GPS.
Apple will not sell a Wifi only tablet with GPS.

I have a double din pioneer but it was way more than $250. Let me know if you want pics.

There are some inexpensive double din units out there. You can get some Pioneer units sub 400 buck at best buy. I just installed a single flip out in mine the other week. Let me know ifyou want some help or someone to install it for way cheaper than any shop will charge.

It's not that they won't, Apple doesn't make a wifi only with GPS antenna. Although if you download a GPS app with offline maps. You can then buy an iPad that is Lte ready. It has an internal gps antenna that works fine. You will have a gps all good to go. I use one for aviation all the time.

Or you could get an external bluetooth antenna to use on the wifi only model. But, its a pain in the ass.

I paid around $200 for a used mini with the GPS which works great with the stock HU. I have since upgraded the HU to a single DIN Pioneer to get a decent hands free set up. All in was just a bit over $300.
