986 Bike Rack : Mock-Up

Few problems with the overall concept, but I think they can be worked out.

#1) Top cannot go up/down with the rack installed. It's close, but would need to shave some metal from the center - about 1/4" deep, extending for 6-8" on each side.

#2) Rear tire rests on paint. I'm going to look at those kayak pads and see if they can be retrofitted to avoid this issue

#3) Can't get into trunk. Well, you can because the bike will rotate up, but it won't open all the way without the forks hitting the rollbar

On the bright side - If it's a nice sunny day, drop the top, pop the rack on and head out.

It's 1" angle iron, 48" long. Needs to be trimmed ~3in on each side. The blue is just painters tape to keep it from scratching everything up.

The U-bolt mounting is pretty poor, need to come up with an easier system, and a plastic screw lever or something for quick disassembly.

overall, it's functional for a mockup prototype..

I saw a bike rack made by taking off the bumperettes (ok, that's nota word) and using the mounting structure under them as hard points. Solves the down sides you have listed.

LOL Cool. I was thinking the same but putting some type of flat piece of foam and board in between the tire and trunk lid.

What is your plan B when it starts raining really hard on the way home? :)

I have one of these

and used to have one of these until someone smashed into when I was at a strip mall

@ Perfetlap - the willwood is a nice system. But I'm looking for something to let me take the 986 to nearby spots to ride. if rain is in the forecast, I won't be riding, or if I'm going far - I'll just take the Cayenne with the Thule hitch mount system.

If you absolutely won't put it behind the bumper and don't care to have the top up, how about fabricating a class 1 hitch mount to the roll-bar with a class 1 hitch-rack.
You could have a wheel behind each headrest and it wouldn't look like a scrawny bike was humping your Box'.

I wouldn't want the tire rubbing on the paint

I can't believe I forgot to comment on that. But that could be fixed by laying a foam roller across the span of the rear trunk so that its strapped down using velcro. The velcro could be threaded through the center of the foam roller and secured on the backside of the trunk so that the trunk can close. This way the tire sits on the foam roller, just like indoor rollers. And watch out for the potholes, very easy to dent the rear trunk because of the convex shape.

Still for the time needed to clamp on the fork mount, remove the wheel, strap down the rear tire. I'm already out on my bike using the Wilwood or Bird system.... and since the top can go up, no one's sitting in my parked car while I'm out on the the bike. :D

That's why I mention a foam backed board, but i would just have it velcroed strapped to the wheel instead the deck lid. It just needs to be a large enough foot print to prevent denting of the deck lid.

Come on tell us the truth - you really did this to offer a ride to a second passenger. :)

OMG - can you imagine the look on the cop's face as you drove past...

Nice Trek, btw. I've got an '88 560.
