Two Boxster Manual Transmission Questions - Random stuff
Questions for you all.
1) When parking, do you leave the car in gear or not? 2) When idling at a traffic light, In gear (with clutch in) or not? |
When parking, I'll leave the car in gear and pull the handbrake too.
Always idle in neutral with the clutch up. Your clutch will thank you. |
In gear and parking brake on when parked. In neutral and clutch out when idle.

Although a worn throw out bearing is arguably cheaper and easier to replace than a main shaft bearing in the transmission....but that's probably not going to go bad. IMO don't worry about clutch in/out when at a light. Short light, clutch in (also leaves you with a quick getaway if needed, long light in neutral). The throw out bearing would get replaced when you're doing the clutch anyways so it isn't like you'll burn it up first |
I meant to ask about that when someone posted the PPI checklist a while back. What is wearing when you have the clutch depressed when at a light? Sometimes I leave it depressed and sometimes not and I can't think of what difference it makes.

When parked, I leave the car in gear, against the slope with parking brake.
At lights, I am usually still in gear unless it goes red on me coming up to it I'll take neutral. |
In neutral and parking brake on when parked unless on a hill, the parking brake and in gear.
At lights I'm in neutral and in fact just coast around a lot in neutral when decelerating. Keeping the clutch pedal pushed keeps the throw out bearing engaged and spinning under load. My thought is there's no reason to put the extra wear on the bearing. |

generally the throw out bearing wear is not the problem with keeping the car in gear when at a stop light. the main problem with foot on the clutch was wear on the thrust washers in older cars, primarily older brit four bangers which had poor oiling systems.
