Towing the Box to NC for vacation
I'm thinking of using my 2010 F150 with a towing package to trailer my boxster on vacation to the Smoky Mountains. Our rented cabin is just 20 minutes from the Tail of the Dragon.
My question is about trailers. From the looks of it, I will pay $55 a day to rent a trailer from UHaul. Ten day vacation, $550 plus tax. Should I be thinking about purchasing a used car trailer? Seems like a lot of cash to throw away on a rental. I guess I could always drop it off somewhere relatively close to our cabin and re-rent it for a one way trip home when we leave, but that could be dicey if they don't hold it or one just like it for me. Our cabin is out in the sticks and 30+ minutes away from gas stations and grocery stores. Thoughts? |
you could always take the $550 and put it in the tank of the boxy and drive it to n/c. 10east to mobile then head north....., would be my suggestion. the boxy will get better mileage than the f-150 to boot.

Buy a lightly used steel car hauler since you have an F150 and will not be limited on towing weight.
If you don't have space to store after vacay just sell. Enjoy! |

Just make sure the bearings are greased and tires aren't too old or dry rotted tow dolly |
Beautiful area up here. I haven't even had a chance to bring my boxster to the Dragon yet and I live less than half an hour fun it.
I would purchase a car hauler and just resell it. Probably make back the whole amount. |
Did I forget to mention I MUST bring my wife and large dog and a load of crap from the house as well?
We can't drive the box fit these reasons and the full race suspension (very uncomfortable) |
sorry to hear about being overloaded....... does your wife have a driver's license? that will cure cargo capacity issues, the track suspension, not so much:o

You should have come 2 hours further east, rented one of my cabins and I could show you roads that make the dragon look like an interstate, with no traffic and no cops. The dragon is very overrate.

Pictures of the cabins please....

I would be concerned with towing your car with trailer and being loaded down with a regular half ton truck going through the mountains. The truck will be stressed going up and down the mountains. Engine, tranny and brakes will be on its limits if not past them. The truck might be rated at the GVWR to handle the load but doesn't mean it will like it for extended periods of towing. If it was me I would opt out on towing the box with your truck. If it was a 3/4 ton or higher with a diesel motor you would be safer. That is just my opinion but something to think about.
