Are worn out A/C knobs, like this one, fixable?

Looking to buy a used Boxster and see a decent amount of cars with A/C knobs worn out like the one below. Not sure what to make of it.

Few fixes for this problem. You can take them out real carefully and respray, buy some sort of a sticker that goes over it, or color it with a sharpie. I know crazy huh.

Does that climate control swap out easily with the newer two- window display?

that problem is common on the 987 / 997 models. I am in the process of cleaning all that crap off of my "knobs" and will repaint them with some brush on model type paint. I am comfortable with losing the temp script and the fan blade diagram.
