Two easy questions..

1..Does the groove on an inner CV joint go inward or out?

2..Are the oil pan bolts a torx socket or standard?

Thanks. I guess when the balls just fall out, it was time for a new CV.

Oil pan bolts are regular head, I think 10mm. They are pretty small. Don't know the CV answer.

easy questions indeed.

1. out. as in the direction of the wheel.
2. oil pan bolts are standard. (at least on the 2 Boxsters i owned).

the CV bolts falling off do not indicate the the CV need to be replaced, it just indicates they were not torqued every 30k mile as instructed in the service table.

after you complete the job, re torque the bolts after 500 miles or so.
make sure the bolts and thread are perfectly clean of grease before you put them back.

most mechanics will agree, when the ball bearings are falling out of a c/v joint it is coming really close to the time to replace it. generally, when they start popping it is a good time to start thinking about taking a different car for work.
