Steering Wheel Extension
Is there any way to make the steering wheel extend closer to me? With the racing seat I just put in, I sit further back and lower down and now I find the steering wheel too far away. It is already extended all the way out. To find the proper position, with your back on the seat, extend your arms and rest them on the steering wheel. The wheel should rest right on your wrist, however now it rests in the lower palm of my hand, which means I need it to come about 1-2 inches closer to me. Is there an aftermarket extension I can buy? Suggestions for a DIY? Thanks

I don't *think* there are any solutions if you want to keep your oem steering wheel. the steering column is a threaded shaft, and the steering wheel attaches direct to it. a spacer wouldn't really work in this situation.
if you go to an aftermarket wheel it is possible, but you would lose the airbag. aftermarket wheels require a 'hub' that attaches to the threaded shaft on one side and has a relatively universal bolt pattern on the other for attaching momo, sparco, omp, etc., steering wheels. this arrangement tends to position the wheel closer to the driver. if you need it even closer, add a spacer (they are available for aftermarket wheel applications) or a steering wheel quick release (make sure you get one with horn functionality like nrg). I think there are different length hubs available as well. |
Feeling so much better with a smaller wheel (I'm 6.2). Look & feels a tad more sporty as well
Lookup for Raid steering wheel for Porsche in the 320mm config. They aren't that expansive given they are the only aftermarket wheel equipped with a Porsche compatible airbag. Telescoping like OEM, no weird looking bellows, spacers, or anything. Mine has super duper up/down F1 paddles... makes the car go faster http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1381469734.jpg Pix: https://www.google.com/search?q=RAID+steering+wheel+boxster&biw=1920&bih= 942&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=spXPVJa6LuiRsQTlh ICIDQ&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg#imgdii=_ |
you might be able to go with an aftermarket airbag wheel. raid/atiwe are the big makers of such things. they use hubs too (so that their steering wheels can be used by a variety of auto manufacturers) but have a very specific bolt pattern to join hub and wheel. their wheels/hubs are a different depth than oem and *I think* sit a little closer than oem. I think you can also get a spacer (check fvd). big $$$ however ...

here's one that should fit (you would have to confirm the hub, but I think you just need a 1/2" washer so that the teeth engage) ...

Does anyone have any experience with these extensions? i need to bring the steering wheel a couple of inches closer and want to keep the airbag.
i was looking at this as an option. pretty expensive but if it does the job i might cough up the dough: Steering Wheel Extender - Carnewal |
my mom used to put a pillow on her seat to get closer :-)

haha! can you provide a link to said pillow? :) i reached out to the manufacturer Carnewal to confirm if that fits the Boxster and what's the final price. if they say it works i'll prob get it and hope for the best. damn these long legs! they are getting expensive! |
If you are only looking for a couple of inches, these may help, and on sale at Macys!

Lol those also would help in the looks department. What about the pedals perhaps modifying those to be a little farther?

check - vat may be refundable. in fact, as an international purchaser, they may not need to even charge you vat?

No chance of a VAT refund.
593$ Bought me this: http://i1314.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6u54q4mj.jpg http://i1314.photobucket.com/albums/...psstkeuacd.jpg Delivered in 4 days from Finland. Let's see how it fits. |
it fits!!! and boy what a difference it makes! finally the steering wheel is in easy reach, my legs are comfortable and not touching the steering wheel, i can heel and toe easily and i am not leaning forward in tight turns to have leverage so my lower back is loving it!
money well spent!! i will snap some pics and share more details when i get a chance. |
I went about this differently as my better half who is significantly smaller than me needs the wheel full forward. Centre console delete allows me more room to bring the seat closer to the wheel and spread the knees. Not perfect. Would love to get the extension :( |
You gotta keep the wife happy :)
I thought about that at one point but my full bucket seat forces my legs close together like a lady wearing a tight skirt so that was a no go |

I did it myself for the 996. Same fitment as the 986.
I've made a batch if anyone is interested. |
Tell us more about it.
Did you need to extend the wiring in the steering column. What about the SRS wiring? From what I under stand extending the wiring for SRS (Airbag) is a no no. |
I pulled the steering wheel off the car, took some dimensions and spent some hours on Autocad and CNC machines. The worst part is replicate the spline.
The spacer is made in 2 parts: female splined aluminium is a "copy" of the steering wheel side and matches the OEM column. The male splined side is steel made and it's a "copy" of the column, and matches the steering wheel. As you see in the pics, the male and female parts are bolt together: when you fit it you first fit the alu side, then use the stock nut to fix it on the column, then bolt the male splined part on the alu side and cover all with the rubber boot. You don't need to extend the airbag wires as they're long enough, only a horn cable requires to be extended. You can extend it as in the pic. After all this, fit the steering wheel on the male splined hub and tight the extra nut. Extending the airbag wires is not required. But it's not an issue: I did the same job years ago on a Renault Clio Sport and Airbag wires weren't long enough. I simply cutted and extended them and no issues or warning lights came on at the end of the job.http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1494435637.jpg |

Hello,
some more pics. |
Hello, I've updated the pics, both in this discussion and my advert, and deleted many pics that now could only make confusion.
Thank you. |
