Left knee hits steering wheel when engaging clutch.
 

Hello, I am new to the forum and have been reading a lot of great info.

I am thinking hard of getting a 986 Boxster S and have even test driven one (2000 model).

I love the looks and plan on doing road track events as well as nice weather driving. Bonus is the wife loves them also.

HOWEVER, like the title says I cannot shift without bumping my knee which is quite annoying. I am 6'1" 180 and happen to have longer legs (34 inseam). Made sure seat is the lowest it can go and seat all the way back.

Hard to believe they did not add tilt till 2005 models which is a bit more than I wanted to pay for this toy.

Does anyone have any advice or is this just not the car for me?

Racing seats might lower it another inch and maybe a flat bottomed steering wheel?

Edit: I also made sure the steering wheel was telescoped out as far as it could go also.

I roughly have your dimensions and then some, make sure you adjust the seat all the way back, I have very large feet and must drive barefoot, my left knee gets near the wheel but I approach from a slightly diagonal reach to really make room, other than the foot size problem I can drive the car fine.

Is a tiptronic out of the question?

The steering wheel telescopes, see if you can adjust it to fit.

I have a problem that my right hand hits my right knee when turning the wheel.
I pull the wheel towards me if I go for a 'spirited drive.
It is ridiculous the wheels do not have up & down adjustment!

Column is at angle, so it raises and lowers when adjusting in and out. I've similar inseam and gave mine adjusted out to max.

Switch from 34 to a 32 inseam.

Odd, 34 is my size and I don't have this issue. I do have the seat most of the way down and the wheel telescoped all the way out (towards me).
If you've tried all that with no luck, then it might be your technique.

I'd trade you my 27" inseam in a heartbeat.

Did not with my S2000 though or 2011 Mustang GT.

Looks like the car is not for me unless I want to opt for a 2005 or newer.

yup , you may need to shop a 2005+ 987.1 Boxster which added tilt to the telescopic str whl adjustment


beats me why it wasnt there to begin with , as many cars have had that tilt feature since the 1960s

Porsche prob lost quite a few " tall or big guy " 986 Boxster new car buyers the first 8 production years and even now at resale

Read the thread I just posted about being tall.

Am 6'3" and i have no problems with leg room!

I could never fit in a mx5 or a s2k, again, make sure the seat is all the way down and back, the Boxster is generally quite larger than other roadsters.

You should try a racing seat:)

I'm 6'3" and I have no issues. The issue I have is the 42" waist. I'm running out of room between me and the steering wheel. But I don't think that is Porsche's fault.

I'm between 32 and 34 inseam, depends on the maker of the pants. The problem I'm only having is my leg (just below the knee cap) rubs against the underside of the dash every time I shift. It's not much of a big deal to me, other then that it seems to be a good fit for my stature.

Could try different shoes or barefoot for a try.
