Almost an owner - Need advice please!
Hi, I am falling fast and hard for an 06 987. Midnight Blue/Grey/Grey. Will be test driving this weekend. Have driven Boxsters before (rentals), so I know how amazing the drive is. A couple of questions:
This Boxster has 17" wheels with Michelin Sport Pilots, which are fairly high profile. They don't look great, but I could handle the looks as long as they don't detract from the performance too much. I will not be driving this car too hard (especially in the beginning!) but would like to take it on a long trip (2000mi) this summer. Would the 17s be better for highway driving? Will the 18s punish me on these rough Canadian roads? Should I try them out and upgrade later if necessary or get 18s with the car? I am thinking about maxing out extended warranty, for peace of mind re: reliability issues. I plan on keeping this car for a long time. Any info on price of extended warranties from dealer as well as pros/cons would be great. Thanks for your help and I will send pics if (ie. when) I take the plunge. ASTOREY Quote:

From my point of view since you do not like the looks of the 17s so much anyway you should use them for your long trip or even ABUSE them if you know what I mean ;).
The 17s would have a more smooth feel on the highway than the 18s. As for extended warranty I would not know it would be best to ask before retrieving the car! Either way, I got a 986S and I consider it amazing, so I cant even imagine 987 :) Good luck! |
I have a 987 with 19" wheels/tires and I think it rides pretty good - and I'll admit, roads in southern California suck the big one!!!! The car looks beautiful with 19" Carrera Classics or Carrera S wheels!!!

I personally prefer the 18s. I have 18 Box S Rims on my non S 987 but have a set of knockoff 17s with winter tires. Granted, we are talking about very different types of tires, but unless you are racing this car on the track, I wouldn't worry anything about picking up the 18s. I drove from California to New Jersey with the 18s on and wanted to do it again as soon as the trip was over - not punished at all man. More comfortable on this combination for 4000 miles than my Acura CLS or Mustang GT - no worries.
