20" wheels
 

Curious of what you guys think of running 20" wheels on a 2003 Boxster S?

So I found a set of 20" wheel in the exact width I want for front and rear. I also found that the tires size I want 235/35R20 front and 275/30R20 are identical in circumference, so both the front and rear tires would spin at the same speed.

The wheels look like this.

These won't look like rubber bands as the sidewall height is the same as 19" tires I was looking at in the same size, but the overall height of the 20" tires is 1" more then the 19" tires.

My '01 had 20s when I got it, 'Rohana RC26'. The rear tires are 275/30R20. Front I'm not sure, but I think they are the same size you chose.

I like the wheel design but 20s would be too much wheel for my taste. The brake rotors would look ridiculously tiny.

and you'll need to lower your boxster considerably to get "that look" reserved to large wheels. Can't imagine a jacked up boxster on 20".

loll that's all not going to be cheap.... springs, tires, wheels, new lugs, align, etc etc... ouch

I was worried if I could lower it? I want to go with the ROW M030 Suspension Kit which lowers the rear 10mm and the front 20mm.

The rear wheel size is 20x10.5. Tire width is 275 = 10.83 " and the diameter is 673 = 26.5". The offset is 40 so I might be able to get by with a 5mm spacer although comparing to the original wheel the new wheel would be 7mm further in. I would think Porsche left 2mm of play room there?

I don't know for sure, but it appears to have the stock suspension still. Compared to my stock '99 base, the car sits 1/2 inch higher (6") - measured from the ground to the jacking points. It rides well, but occasionally if I am driving aggressively on hilly roads I can get a little wheel rub at the bottom of a hard dip.

Also, I checked my front tires and they are 225/30R20.

20s just don't work for me. I have seen quite a few and even struggle with some 19" choices on a 986 model. My focus is always performance driving and not-so-much the Euro-meet crowd so I may be an outlier. In the end, it's still a free country so drive what you like.

Its not only the wheel size which looks wrong on a car designed 20 years ago, but also the harsh riding of 20" wheels coupled with the weight penalty - the car will ride & steer like a tug boat....
But to everyone his own !!

Finding 18" aftermarket wheels for a Boxster is becoming almost impossible, not Porsche styled.

Yeah I'm rethinking the 20" deal. The same wheel comes in 19x8.5 47 offset front and 19x9.5 45 offset. I can't seem to figure out a tire size for that set that would rotate at the same speed. I do want to run 235 tires on the front and 8.5" wheels are ideal for that size.

19x8.5 and 19x10 with a 5x130 bolt pattern, but the hub bore is 71.7 and the Boxster hub bore is 71.6, not sure if that would cause an issue, like the wheel not being centered correctly on the hub?

With those wheels I could run 235 front and 275 rear, which rotate at just about the same speed.

No from me. I had 20's until my wheel man told me I'd kill myself driving a Boxster with 20's so I went down to 19's and I think you'll find there the best fit for the car.

Made-to-order wheels. You order your wheels in any size you need. They will do custom PCD, offset, color, one or two piece wheel, all depending on your requirement. BC Racing's wheels are manufactured in Taiwan - turnover is 30~45days and at no extra cost mate. GREAT bloody wheels for cheap is what it is.

If you are serious about giving your boxster a perfect set of wheels, look for a similar wheel manufacturers and get them done to your liking - doesn't have to be BC but I have to say, these BC guys is the one everybody goes with these days (recently, in Asia anyway). ADV in Japan also does that, few other manufacturers also offer made-to-order.... you just need to get in touch with them.

I'd say $3000 for a full set of custom-made wheels is pretty reasonable, and amazingly good! ADVs are double that price (min) but then... what's not double in Japan lately :/

Yeah man I'm sure you're tired of reading my wheel threads and I'm tired at looking for the right wheel combo in a wheel I like. I do see some I lake at that site!

Did you roll the inner fender in? I like that subtle Porsche sticker.

One thing for sure is that with an increase of 1"in overall circumference you will notice the change in gearing-- SLOWER! Most noticeable after a shift- you will find new dead spots in the powerband. You could use Tire Rack's site to compare tire specs including all dimensions and price.

As for the 20 inches: I like the look of the fat black wheels on the white car, but I don't intend to drive that car much harder than I do my CR-V. Generally its for my family to have fun driving around in a convertible (Tiptronic) Porsche without having to worry about them messing up my '99.
On my Del Sol, I just went from 15"s down to very light 13"s. :eek:

The fender isn't rolled, but could probably use a little. I do get a slight rub when I drive fast through a dip. Most of the 'appearance' work on that car was done by the previous owner, but I really like the look.

I did pick up a 4th 18" wheel to complete a spare set from my parts car. Here's the manufacturer's site: Porsche Wheels by Victor Equipment

So I got contacted BC with the wheel I liked and about size and fitment. They gave me a quote of $4,800 for the set of wheels. :eek:
