Temp gauge and a p0117 fault code

I've got a 2002 Boxster that has been sitting for a while (I think a month since it was last driven). When I started it up and took it for a drive yesterday, I notice that the red light on the temp gauge was blinking.

This gauge also did not move during a 20 minute drive. It showed that the engine stayed cold and did not get up to normal operating temperature (although the heat worked fine).

Also had a Check Engine light come on with the fault code of p0117.

Do I need to replace a coolant sensor, or is something else going on?

Thanks in advance.

P0117 indicates that the coolant temp sensor is shorted to ground. Either a bad sensor or wiring problem.
