You were in 1st gear instead of reverse then. Your transmission has shifter forks inside of it. THe reverse gear is on its own fork with a straight cut gear near the bottom of the pinion shaft. If your level is truely in reverse the car can not go forward as the rest of the gears spin on the shaft together all the time but are not engaged. Only reverse is engaged and it's impossible for the shafts to spin the other way.

More or less what you need to do is shift into 1st gear first then goto reverse, this will stop you from doing what you did.
