Sweet! Who did the work?

Ckrikos 11-12-2014 03:52 PM

Dallas custom steering wheel.

Very nice. I have had several steering wheels modified including the one in my 13 year old Tundra. It is just too important to have a comfortable wheel to hang on to. Not to mention how good they look.

I started getting ready to install the wheel and then I noticed that I didn't have a 24mm socket only 21mm and then 1".

I'm surprised how much thicker the wheel is. I thought it would be a touch thicker, but it seems like a lot more.

They do good work, and it's definitely not cheap.

Nice lookin' wheel.

If you just recover your wheel without any of the bells and whistles it's not too bad, but since it was out there I had them do the works and cover the entire thing in leather even the hub.

Any thicker steering wheel than stock is a huge improvement on driving feel.

Beautiful job!

The previous owner had all kinds of leather work done on my 2003 S, including sun visors and arm rests on the doors. The steering wheel looks just like yours. Someone in Texas did the work, so maybe the same shop.

I've been wanting to do this upgrade for a while for the finished look.
But I have to disagree on the driving feel. A thinner wheel with less insulation transmits more feed back. It's first enjoyment you pick up on with an older sports car.
But more padding also filters out more of the jarring. I guess for a grand touring cruiser like a newer 911 Turbo it's a better fit. For an older 911 Turbo, or any 911 for that matter, I'd go with a thin steering wheel.

Totally agree. From a performance standpoint, I find you get more feedback from a thinner wheel and for me, makes the car feel more sporty. A big, cushy steering wheel reminds me of a big cushy car. It's a mental thing. Great for a DD where you slap on the cruise and let the car do all the work, but for the thrill of driving, you want to feel the car as much as you can.

The 24mm socket came in today. Thanks amazon prime. The car appeared to steer a little quicker with the thicker wheel. Maybe it placebo effect. The car also smells like leather.

That is a great looking interior. Nicely done.

Thanks, all I need to do is recover the door lids and handles, but they are ok for the time being.

I love your car! Great looking mod. Wish I could have a 996 Turbo and still keep my 986. Someday:)

Ckrikos 11-15-2014 08:52 PM

Thanks for the compliment. I did about 100miles of driving today and my impressions are I like the thickness as it promotes better handling of the wheel (meaning my thumbs are not wrapped around the wheel) and I really like the 12 o'clock indicator as it's easy for me to see where the wheel is pointing.
