Sent my car in for the dreaded clutch Ims combo . I also have a leaking drivers side cam cover . it has been leaking a small amount of oil for about 3 years or so. I figured it would be a good time to take care of it . The shop quoted me 800 to fix ! drivers side is more difficult than the other 6 hours labor . sounds real high to me but I agreed to it . Did I get screwed or what ?

Can you do it for cheaper? Probably, its just a matter of convenience. Don't second guess yourself.

Their a bit of a pain to do with the engine in the car. If you are going to do it with the engine in the car, take the rear mounts out so you can tilt and move the engine a little to gain easier access to the covers. It's not really necessary during removal but once you have the sealant on the flanges it will make the assembly process a lot easier :-) Don't forget to lock the cams down before opening them up :-)
Oh and don't think extra sealant is better - make sure you make a solid very thin bead along all the necessary surfaces to avoid clogging the oil passages!!!

I paid $1,200 to have both sides re-sealed on my 996.

Its a time-consuming PITA because the cam covers hold the cam shafts in. So you have to have a special tool to hold them in place and make 100% sure that nothing moves while you're re-sealing the covers.

I did mine with the engine out of the car because I needed to change the chain ramps to correct a cam deviation problem. The covers can be resealed with the engine in the car but I wouldn't do it myself. Access is very limited and it's overhead. I'd pay the man.

Now on the other hand if you were here in so cal i would do it for you at a cheaper rate. Problem is you are not here... lol

I am done crying over the cost of the reseal , i knew it was gonna cost a few bucks . a 20 minute job with the motor out . no more leak is a beautiful thing .
