Engine Out - Reccomended maintenance?
 

I'm going to have my 3.2 motor out of my Boxster soon.
Besides the IMS and RMS, are there any major or minor maintenance items on the engine itself that would be good to perform while I have plenty of access to it? Engine has 60k and is my daily driver, so longevity is most important.

I'm assuming you are planning to DIY, if not, all you need is about $5k to $7K and a competent Porsche mechanic.

Things to consider...
Get the engine and undercarriage as clean as you can before you start.
There are a few tools that you may want to make sure you have before you start: correct size hex wrench and torx sockets, and a triple square wrench for the odd bolt between the transmission and engine.

Cooling system: Water pump, thermostat (160*), coolant expansion tank, hoses, flush and replace all coolant. The pump and tank are definitely best to get done while it is out.

Ignition: Inspect coil packs and wires, replace spark plugs and tube o-rings.

Misc engine: AOS, cam wear pads/chain tensioner pads (if equipped), voltage regulator on the back of the alternator, lower portion of oil filler tube, front engine mount.

Have plenty of coolant, and power steering fluid on hand for the re-install. It may be hard to find the right stuff locally.
My oil dipstick tube was very brittle and cracked while being removed. I'm probably going to fabricate my own replacement.

If you have a tiptronic, its a good opportunity to flush all the fluid while you have the torque converter out.

I haven't added it all up, but along with the IMSB and tools I'm pretty sure that I went beyond $2k in parts and fluids. I used Pelican Parts for most of the stuff and Amazon.com for the rest.

Why is it coming out ?

carefully inspect all tubes, pipes, oil filler tube, and coolant tank/lines for cracks and brittle-ness. Easy when it's out. Very much more difficult when it's in!

Well, one engine is coming out (intermix issue), and another used motor (TBD) is going to go in this winter. A used engine is all that's in my price range, so I'm hoping to find one in decent shape and perform as much TLC as possible before putting it in.
