Moved over to the Dark Side, got a 996 Targa

First and foremost, I HAVE NOT replaced my Boxster. My wife felt left out and fell in love with this 996 Targa.

Its an 04 Targa Tip, black on black with these beautiful 19" chrome and black wheels. It came with a lot of service records and was serviced regularly at one of the top indy shops in So Cal. It looks and drives beautifully. I must say, with the 3.6 it does fly, but frankly I like my Boxster better.

Ill take it out on one of the local back roads for some twisty fun tomorrow.

I have been up on some of the 996 forums and hands down this is a much better place to hang out

Nice snag! I am unfamiliar with the 996 targa, is the roofline the same side profile wise? The rear quarter seems different. The new targas are lovely looking!

Congratulations! I still say that a 986 and a 996 is the best of both worlds. And I love that huge panoramic Targa. Beautiful car.

not sure about the profile, but the rear window is different

The sliding Targa roof is almost as nice as a ragtop

Congrats on the Targa. Don't see too many of those.

Any rattles? I've seen stories that they can be a bit noisy.

Thanks

From what I can tell, they only made 508 Targa's in 04, so who knows maybe in 30 years it will be worth big bucks

Drove it home 70 miles and it seemed rattle free, certainly no more than my 986 with the top up.

The tires almost brand new Michelin Sport AS3's seemed to be noisy, at least on grooved concrete freeway, on asphalt they were better

I agree! When my wife and I were looking for a new vehicle earlier this year, I tried to no avail to get her to go for either a 996 targa or turbo. We ended up with a panoramic roof on a.....Toyota Highlander:( At least we have the roof. Congrats on a great purchase!

Nice 996. That 3.6 must feel very nice. Now that you are on the dark side, you know there is a pecking order right?

Still cant get that out of my head. Smh:p Enjoy!

Yes, the 3.6 does have a nice kick when you punch it. Really is too bad they partially neutered the Boxster

absolutely there is a pecking order

Boxster
all other Porsche models
all other cars

With both a 986 and a 996, I can swing both ways

Nice looking targa Jay.

I think that the targa is actually a cabriolet body with the targa roof grafted onto it, I know that that is how they did it with the prior series.

Wow Jay, what a surprise. No warning and all - poof! (sneaky bugger)

Looks nasty. Don't do anything stupid with that... learn it first

Congratulations X1,000,000

With a nice size gap between all other Porsche models and all other cars. Sweet ride.

No problem. It actually is fairly civilised in its handling

However I am thinking of putting one of these body kits on the Targa

While throttle lift oversteer is lessened in the 996 than earlier models, its still there. If you get into a corner too hot, let off the throttle smoothly while trying to unwind the wheel a bit as you transition to the brakes.

If you abruptly lift while still turning tightly, that rear end will get light and want to come around. If it starts to do so, then put in a BIG dose of opposite lock and hold it for a moment because it won't correct itself with just a flick of the wrist like the more balanced Boxster. I had to learn this for myself the hard way. Just sayin'.

Those body kits were insane!
