:-( Bye guys.
On a total whim today I traded both my yellow 986 Boxster and black 987 Cayman for a 2014 981 Cayman.
While I am very happy with the new car....I will miss hanging around here. There are lots of fantastic people on this forum. You guys have been so incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for all your fantastic advice. |
Nobody said you have to leave. And you owe us pictures. :D

Cool, congrats! Personally, I'd like to see pics and hear a comparison report. :)

Hey, your car is close enough to stick around, nice grab. Which motor did you get, fill us in on some options! We don't even know what color it is yet!

All three cars are pretty different. The 986 Boxster....has the softest ride....but is also -to me- the most toss-able. The 987 Cayman is still my favorite as far as car-feel. It just feels like a go-kart. The steering is BY FAR the best of the three in the 987. Even thought the 981 is technically a lighter car, it doesn't feel as light as the 987. Steering is heavier...slightly...in the 981. The stock exhaust note in the 981 is AWESOME. Interior in the 981 is fantastic. Insanely comfortable seats. Really good looking overall. My 981 has the auto tranny. Fantastic...lightning fast....but it drives me to madness that P-O-R-S-C-H-E....one of the greatest racing Marques of all time....can't get the gear change oriented correctly. (It should be pull for up-shift, push for downshift).
Overall....the 981 feels like a very nice handling BMW. (I spent 17 years in BMW's...so I have a basis for this statement). I'm glad to be back in a tan and red car. The wheels are from the 987. I had just bought them a few weeks ago....wasn't about to give those up. They work perfectly with the 981. But I did shed a tear saying goodbye to the 986 and 987. Magical cars. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1413742979.jpg http://986forum.com/forums/uploads01...1413742997.jpg |

Very nice! Enjoy!

Congratulations that is a very nice looking Cayman.
|
Congrats!!! That is a beautiful ride!!!!
|
Congrats again! That car is beautiful. Thanks for the review and pics.

Congrats! Great color.
Tue I was giving a presetation on my Parade trip to the Porsche club at the local Porsche dealer. Prior to the presentation, I was looking at the Boxster GTS they had on the showroom floor. Beautiful car (it was red also). The friendly salesperson who covets my Cayman said I could trade both my cars in (I'm pretty sure he said straight up) for the GTS (sticker of $97K). That would have been a great deal, but I said I'd miss my Cayman. He said he could do the same deal on a Cayman GTS. I said I'd miss my Boxster. He keeps trying - last fall he wanted me to trade both on a 991. I think that was going to cost me $10K. I feel like the last of the Mohicans now that you don't have 1 of ea. I'm sure you'll enjoy the new ride. Those 981s are hard to beat at DEs. |
Wow, the red over tan looks brilliant on that car!

Holy smokes and congrats!!

Thanks guys. It's a pretty damn good car.

Sweet ride Tucker. I had the pleasure of driving a DE session in a 991 Carrera S PDK two weeks ago and the car was amazing. Timing went down in the PM but I think I had a shot at a top 3 time on street tires. Probably wasn't going to get the pro driver in the 997 Cup car though... :o

Impulse? Seeing that car seem pretty rational.
BTW, I thought Porsche finally caved in on their tradmark backwards up and down paddle change on 2014 cars? |

I want to see a track test between the base 991, the lighter Boxster Spyder, the more powerful Cayman GTS and the lower COG Boxster GTS (with only marginally less power than either Cayman GTS and base 991). I think we would be surprised about who would come out on top. |

2014-05-04 GPRPCA DE at MAM - YouTube The CS driver in this video was getting used to the car (1st time driving it on the track). He said he shifted to Sport + half way thru the run and there was no staying with him on the straight after that. He was taking it easy thru the corners, so I was able to somewhat stay near. But 6500 redline & 303HP in my 987 vs 9K & 325HP in his 981 + PDK + all the new electronics is like bringing a knife to a gun fight. Technology marches on. |
Even though the numbers aren't to far apart....there is a lot more low-end grunt with the base 981 vs base 987. Add the magic-insta-shift PDK....and I have ZERO reason for an S or GTS. I am having a very very difficult time keeping the speed inline now. More HP/Torque is just beyond me.
It would be interesting to see a real-world lapping comparison between my 981 PDK base vs a 987.2 R (which I've driven at speed). I think it might be very close. This is the first time I've spent any length of time with the PDK...and while a manual is always the pure way to go...no arguement...I can understand why the Porsche engineers are hot on this thing (GT3). It's amazing. So very smart and so blindingly fast at shifting. |
