What a blast. I've been curious about AX for a few years, but just can't get excited enough about driving through cones. THAT looks fun.

Oh once you're slicing through those cones you'll have a different take on it.
Until you hone the ability to control the in-cockpit drill and look down field as one instinctive process, it will seem like you're going faster than you can keep up with.
With AutoX you're not trying to be smooth necessarily, like at the track, but instead you're looking to cut the shortest path between the stop and start line, in what Randy Pobst described as an elegant string of slides.
He came into the professional sports car racing world through local autocrossing.
The downside is the time commitment if you live near a venue that has a turn out. More cars, fewer laps, more waiting. But that has a way of making you focus. The course layouts can get a little repetitive too.
Outside of the car it's great to watch these autox YouTube videos and train your eyes to pick up the corner ahead. I've always thought that fast driving is 90% eyes, 10% hands and feets.

And really at the end of the day, no one learns to be quicker in a single track day or pricey driving school. You need seat time and AutoX, if you have the time, is pennies compared to getting the same seat time at track days/DE.
