Boxster Outlaw
 

Been thinking about what a Boxster Outlaw would look like. With prices getting cheap on 986s especially the earlier cars and lots of them still around it opens up the idea of an Outlaw. Anyone doing anything to their car in the spirt of an Outlaw?

How is outlaw defined??

You can modify or lighten a Boxster for better looks or performance, but I thought the term "Outlaw" was only applied to older historic Porsches that held more value if left stock. I've also seen them referred to as "Hot Rods".

It is my understanding that as far as Porsches are concerned, an "outlaw" is an older Porsche, usually a 356, that has been modified to be more modern, safer, and sportier to drive.

A fellow PCA member here in Dallas owns a 1955 Porsche Continental outlaw, and he realizes that the historic value may have been diminished, but feels the performance is worth it. My 356 was bone stock, and it drove and felt like a car from the 30's. Even smelled old inside. And with an antique Volkswagen suspension, anemic Volkswagen engine, and ridiculously skinny tires on 16" wheels, it was actually scary to drive.

As far as giving a 986 the outlaw treatment, I don't know what that would involve. It already has a decent suspension, power, and wide rubber.

Little t and I have been having the same discussion. Here are our thoughts on the principles;

More powerful engine.
Less weight.
Lowered stance.
Wider tires.
Simplified interior.
Think function not glam.
Think hot rod not race car.
Think less is more/simple is better.
All done to the highest level of quality.

Come on guys no pictures? A proper "Outlaw" is a 356 that was modified by a company called Emory, basically they took a 356 and covered it in vintage racing stuff. Things like drilled out handles (you've probably also seen these on 911s, its an outlaw thing) or drilled out magnesium wheels, plastic windows etc. Their overriding theme was weight reduction. I really do believe a Boxster could pull this off. J.fro your car is actually a really good take on what a Boxster outlaw would be.

What a cool idea! Steam driven, coal tender in the frunk, copper tubes everywhere, fins, bakelite knobs, replace the ECU with a difference engine... the possibilities are endless. Of course the end result would be the size of a small locomotive.

You and I seem to think alike on many things.

I think an Outlaw Boxster would be great! Paying even more homage to the 550. Minimalist interior with vintage style seats, vintage style wheels, the possibilities are endless. And thstone is correct, all about the details.

I follow a guy on instagram who is LS swapping a Boxster. He's also making his own custom door cards that are completely flat and feature cloth pull straps instead of door handles. Very minimalist and could be considered an outlaw. Can't wait to see it finished. I'm not sure if he uses this forum or not

Nice stance and minimalist styling.

Looked into doing the Momo steering wheel but it isn't allowed on cars originally equipped with air bags here in Qc.

Some better seats, center console delete, replace the factory roll hoops with a tube rollbar. Still have to figure out the headlights...

Definitely some Urban Outlaw wheels, I think maybe designing some chrome/aluminum hole drilled door handles, some pepita seats.

those wheels are fine - who makes them? heavy? I think for headlights you have to go the fred/pw route - good price, custom look, and not too modern if you choose the right colour for the surrounds. the go-to for seats is the gt3-style seat, and not much work to get the inserts covered in whatever you want, but it might be cool to go with something a little unconventional like a lotus elise seat, or perhaps tilton. currently the cheapest thing out there that's fia approved would be bimarco on ebay.

So far for the lights, I sandblasted the silver off the "eyeliner" but was unhappy with the results as the angle of attack is less than ideal,(along with fine blast media and lack of consistent high pressure), the very last little silver slivers were impossible to remove. I was going for the all black look of the aftermarket LEDs. Ended up painting the surround black. Not ideal but really shrinks the headlights down.
Not happy with my stock seats but they will have to do for now. Too many higher priorities to do now. Just converted to bullet nose studs, next will drop with Vogtland springs, then wheel spacers and new brakes. That should exhaust my spring play money.

If I may revive this older thread, the concept of outlaw is to make your car your own. With no rules whatsoever. No Magnus guidelines, he has his own style, make it your own. Personally, I want a lil bastard tribute but I am not going to spend $10k to do it, nor go I want race numbers on my car.

If you want engine or suspension mods, go for it. Stickers, steering wheels, badges, whatever. R Gruppe started, no need to copy them, although they did break a silly barrier.

I would probably do the drilled holes in handles and bumpers, move gas cap to middle of hood, different roll cage, Something similar to RS door panels, aluminum pedals, and use an old porsche color like orange or Mexico blue with a side script. Of course, some type of comfortable racing seat and other interior stuff. I would love to see it.
