Boxster Is Back!!!!Dead Again...

Hi Guys,
Today,I went and picked up my boxster. :D It has a brand new factory rebuilt engine in it.The total bill from this shop was $13,500.The guy sais I need to keep it under 3500 rpms and under 80 mph for 2000-3000 miles which kinda sucks. :(

Now Gentleman, you all know my most recent luck with cars.Well,it continues

So,I pick up my car and get around a quarter mile away and it stalls at the red light.I try restarting and it just stalls immediatly. So,I puch the car accross the four lane highway with people yelling remaks such as "peice of ********************" and "get the fu*k off the road".The car is acting like it is out of gas even though it reads almost full so I buy a small gas tank and walk to get it filled.I try restarting and it seems to start but stays around 500 rpms wanting to stall.

The shop owner drove over and released the engine cover to look around and tryed starting it with his foot on the gas revving to around 2500 rpms and the engine just had an odd sound but stayed running.

It got towed to the shop and he will take a look and call me tommarro.I wonder if there is something the old shop could have put in my gas to mess it up???

Man that does suck!

Years back I bought a new factory motor for a Corvette. Drove it 5 miles from the service shop and it died on the Interstate.

To say I was angry is an understatment.

Fortunately, that guy has me towed in and fixed the issue in five minutes, loose wire!

Go figure.

The upside is was that that factory motor was a RACE motor and ran like a B....!

Maybe your story will turn out as well!

Good luck!

KRZTACO 03-14-2006 03:04 PM

Wow.

That blows.

You are living one of the worst nightmare's ever.

On a positive note, it's probably just a loose wire.

So they installed a NEW Factory motor with 0 miles on it?

$13,500 included labor and the motor?

How much was just the motor from Porsche?

Was size motor?

Thanks,

KRZ

Frank, that does suck. Don't get too worked-up...tomorrow is a new day! I think the shop will take care of you.

How did you pay the bill...by check...or credit card??

Break that new engine in as directed! A little restrant now will hopefully afford you many years of good service. A small price to pay actually.

Perfectlap 03-14-2006 05:21 PM

record the mileage before you leave and take the car directly to the nearest Porsche dealer and have full systems check to see if these guys didn't break something else while tinkering in there.

If you wait to long they'll wash their hands of it.

Its only $100 to have a certified Porsche mechanic do a full once over.

Frank 03-14-2006 05:42 PM

That price was for the motor (2.5) and the labor. That was the total bill.It was all payed by check.6k up front and 7.5k today. So,hopefully it is something simple.I'll update you after I hear from him.

bigislandboxster 03-14-2006 06:23 PM

Wow....I thought I had run into some bad luck with my Boxster...My luck was more of the body panel type tho. I feel for ya! Something tells me this will be something minor, and you'll be cruising in no time! Keep us up to date, and stay optimistic Frank! ;)

I feel your pain, sometimes cars can just be a total PITA.

However, equally disturbing in my mind is your comment:

So,I puch the car accross the four lane highway with people yelling remaks such as "peice of ********************" and "get the fu*k off the road".

I guess this is schadenfreude in action, I'm sure some people derived some joy from seeing you push your fancy import, but that's still pretty f*cked up.

That's a highly dangerous situation you were in, and I can only assume someone stopped and helped you out. If you were doing the push/steer solo, then shame on 'em.

blinkwatt 03-15-2006 12:58 AM

How much was the engine and labor seperate?

Frank 03-15-2006 02:52 AM

I was actually pushing from the bottom of the winshield and steering with my other hand till a road construction guy came over and helped with the last 2 lanes.

The yelling people must have been jeleous :D

I pulled out my bill and the engine itself was $9,619.30, $2,485 in labor,an the rest was fluid,filters,a/c system recharge, and the belt along with $762 in taxes.

Why did you buy a new engine? www.car-part.com is a National Wrecker search to find parts...

Here are the bottom 4 examples that you could have had delivered... Anyway too late now. Maybe somebody searching for an engine down the road will see this post.

Man, on those 97/98 engines, is anyone else here afraid of buying an engine used from THOSE two years?

It could just be my cynical nature.

Hi Frank,

Was the engine a NEW one from Porsche of North America?

I wouldn't dare take a used 2.5 from those model years no matter how cheap. Hope its working out for you.

Frank 03-15-2006 10:54 AM

I did look into all the used engine options but it seemed that it would end up costing 7 or 8 thousand for one of them to be put in and they could go any time after that. Now this engine, from what I heard is made better and will last a very long time as it is direct from porsche and different from the defective design.

TriGem2k 03-15-2006 11:13 AM

Frank why didnt you go with an "S" engine or a 3.4L?

Frank 03-15-2006 11:51 AM

I believe my engine does not have e-gas or maybee it's the other way around but all the other engines use it and it would be difficult to convert. That is what I read in other posts. So,i I just chose to go stock even though I would love to have a 3.2

Hi,

Yep, you're correct, the eGas (Drive-by-Wire) Engine is no easy swap! You also have to change the Accelerator, Fuel and Evac Systems in addition to the DME - OUCH!

BTW, Congrats on getting it all sorted out (I'm sure your current issue will be an easy fix). Now would be a good time to change your Fuel Filter so your new Engine doesn't accumulate a lot of Gunk and gets lots of good Fuel Pressure. About $40 and it's a fairly easy DIY project...

Just curious, as I have a 100% stock 98 Box.... what is wrong with those two years' engines?

I will say that I've had mine for 2 years (bought in May of 04), have since put close to 20k on it, and have not had a single problem yet. What am I in for????

Hi,

The main issues were RMS (continues to plague the M96), a number of engines were assembled with known faulty cylinder liners to avoid falling behind demand with production (but those engines pretty much died an early death, not a problem if you've done 20k+ mi.), and there were some components, such as the MAF which were subsequently re-designed to be more reliable.

There really isn't much more to worry about than the later engines, the reputation is undeserved for the most part. But, these are the oldest engines in the Model Line, and many have now racked up some miles. Some are now naturally having more issues. More a matter of age than any inherent faults...

Happy Motoring!... Jim'99
