I don't do a lot of hard braking - in fact, I use my clutch and downshifting more to slow my car (unless, of course, someone decides to stop suddenly in the left hand lane - a rather common phenom on soCal freeways) - yet, within a few days of washing my car, my front rims are caked with brake dust.

Is this a Porsche side effect that I'll have to learn to live with or is this something that occurs in the new period (my car is about a month new) that will eventually wear off?

Yes, its very common, and it does ease off after a while. My 987 is 6 months old, and now it takes 2-3 weeks to cover the wheels in dust instead of 1

A common and clever tip is next time you wax your car, do the same to you wheels after they are clean - with a good layer or wax on the wheels your break dust will wash quickly off with a quick squirt of a hose (or in the rain!).

Everytime I drive my 987 there is always a layer of brake dust on the wheels. I tend to clean it everytime I go out in in. Creature of habit. I have to say it is the only car I have ever liked to clean.

I notice this more on German cars specifically than others. Think of Audis and Bimmers you've seen with gunmetal gray looking wheels that were actually just dirty. It takes NO-TIME for it to get dirty (and it's worse in the front). It's terrible when a person isn't a clean car freak like us and the wheel is practically black! After a while the wheels get stained.
