Daylight Running Lights
Hi all,
I have been thinking of fitting a set of daylight running lights to my 986, has anyone here done this and can recommend some (pics are always welcome) :) |
an easy thing to do is use the fog lights as DRLs
Its a 5 min install for the wiring and only costs a couple of $ I also swapped out the H-7 bulbs for LEDs ~ $40 on ebay http://986forum.com/forums/performance-technical-chat/29961-daytime-running-lights-hack.html DRL-Fog Light Hack - 986 Series (Boxster, Boxster S) - RennTech.org Forums If you want to add LED strip DRL, this is a nice package http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DX6BKW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3HC0 TWCL7KNZJ&coliid=I25UOME3IV8CIO |
The Litronics have a marker light. Comes on with parking lights. I just use those. Love the dim lit look of the headlight marker lamps. They stay on with the main headlights to make 2-tone.

New these were $3200 per side after a lady backed into me. You can find them on eBay all day long and many other sites including Pelican. Note. The 'Litronic' part means there's controls and parts that make the main lights self level. Some are just weighted or balance and are far less. Others will chime in on this. http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/a...pspm5ekziv.jpg http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps9imz9nyn.jpg |
How are these things wired in Canada, which has mandatory DRLs in all cars? Seems like they must have a simpler fix than fuse taps and jumper wires.
Canadians, can you comment? |
Simpler?
Not sure about that... but there is a double size dedicated DRL relay on the relay panel that illuminates all exterior lights while the car is running. The only thing my headlight switch does is turn on the gauge illumination. |
Here are my after market ones.

I just ran a jumper wire in the fuse panel (see DRL hack threads) to make my fog lights turn on with the ignition. I swapped out the fog light bulbs for DELs from ebay. Easy, cheap, and effective!

Thanks Dwight!

I like the softer glow of the integrated CCFL... ;) |
LED Daytime Running Lights and add-on LED lighting for interior or exterior car use.
Also, think about the notion of "DRL Controller" Quote:

I had some bulbs in my Fog lights for DRLs that had like 15 or so leds each and and a fake looking bluish tint (better than nothing). One started to flicker from at least one LED and it looked bad.
I replaced them today with OPT7 H7 CREE LED DRL Fog Light Bulbs - 5000K Bright White- Plug-n-Play (Pack of 2) for around $32/pair, and OMG they are brilliant and have a beautiful bright white beam (like every new car DRL). These are fantastic.....!!!! Great hack. Way more effective than the things I had in there before. Get these.... |
Great to hear.
I had these bulbs in my Amazon cart, but was holding off. After seeing your positive review I took the plunge and ordered them tonight. I'm a firm believer that we need good lighting on our little cars - if they can see us then hopefully they don't pull out in front of us. thanks! |

You'll like these bulbs. You probably should raise the beam of the fogs once they're installed. They will be aiming low and won't be as effective at that angle. I turned 'em 5 full turns clockwise and wrote it down so I could undo it if necessary. |
I just did the drl hack and run my led fog light bulbs
