Oil Thread
Just went through the battery drill on my Boxster Sunday. So while I was there returning my old battery I saw the Castrol 5quart jug on the shelf. Hope this is the right one.

That oil is on the Porsche approved list I believe, Porsche A30 or A3 or something. I saw it at Walmart. I was running Castrol edge 5W40 for a while but am now running Joe Gibbs DT40. If that were to go away somehow I would probably go back to the Castrol Edge 5w40 or 10w40 or maybe give this a shot... I do like Castrol and run their 5W30 in all my other vehicles.

+1 for Castrol! I run Castrol Syntec 5w-50.

If you are very constipated and need some reading material while sitting on the throne, check out this oil thread
Joe Gibbs DT40? - Rennlist Discussion Forums 18 pages, amazing! and I thought some of the threads here were a bit verbose! |
Castrol is what I use. They keep changing the name and graphics on the bottle. Wish they'd settle on something so you don't have to read the fine print to see if you're buying the right stuff.

I'm sure Joe Gibbs Oil is pretty good. But the dealerships only use Mibil 1. Wally world sold the jug of it so to stay in compliance, I stuck with it. Now that there selling Castrol, I'm switching. Right on time too now that im out of warranty. :(:(

I have had the oil in there for around 400 miles I think, and I am not sure if I could tell the difference. (I got new tires at the same time, Hankook RS-3, and they seem to have more noise and transfer more of the road than the Sumitomo HTR Z III that I had so that is the main difference I have been noticing...) Otherwise it feels the same :) Without an oil temp/oil pressure gauge I can't really tell if things are the same, and I'm unsure if I would be able to tell a difference anyway using those gauges if I had them ;) ) I did have a UOA done by Blackstone with the Castrol Edge 5W40 I was running before, and I can compare that with the UOA I will do when it is time to change this oil, but even then it may not be as meaningful due to the differences in the oil, and cross contamination between the old Castrol Edge in the engine and the new DT40. I guess it is mostly a "peace of mind" thing, like changing out the IMS bearing. I wanted to use the best IMS bearing, and I want to use the best possible oil that I can. Right now I believe it to be the DT 40 :) Steve |
