The sound the new Boxster GTS makes!

Have heard the beautiful noise it makes? This has got to be the best sounding factory Boxster ever.

Hm, there is something like too much back fire.
Sounds a little bit too manufactured and metallic to me, sorry. I don't hear that flat-6 howl anymore.

calvani 06-08-2014 04:36 AM

I concur on the backfire and sounding a bit artificial.

Not to be too centric, but I think my 997 Engine (3.6L) powered Boxster sounds way better. I will post videos at some point.

Happy Motoring.

I hate to say it but this sound like my car 3.6, NHP exhaust. Headers without cats, Mid-pipe with 200 count cats. Sport muffler. 987 air intake 74 MM throttle body IPD plenum.

calvani 06-08-2014 05:08 AM

Sounds like jsceash and I were ahead of the factory. ;)

Modern computer controlled engines do not burble. So, the fact that this one does means that it is artificially created.

And that my friends, is sad. Very sad.

Ian c 06-08-2014 06:42 AM

Mine does ... "Open" Pse and sharkwerks bypass :)
Or you can Feather the throttle whilst left foot braking for maximum noise :D
The 991 makes a pretty good noise on lifting .
Not sure if the throttle doesn't mechanically fully close or it's electronic .

jaykay 06-08-2014 10:11 AM

Sometimes I get a snap crackle pop on the overrun and definitely a burble...but not a machine gun effect like this. I wonder how it is created. IIRC the snap and pop got greatly reduced with after installation of a 74mm TB.

I have a custom bypass stock muffler and sec. cat delete pipes that do it. Will try to capture the sound on video and post.

Top_Ramen 06-08-2014 03:12 PM

sounds like an open Capristo exhaust

PorscheBound 06-08-2014 03:14 PM

I'm a fan, fake or not

edc 06-08-2014 03:27 PM

No 981 but I'm quite happy with mine :D It sounds better on the move with some engine load

Thstone, did Porsche really do something to the motor or exhaust to create the burble / pop? Or just enhance it as others in the automotive industry have done?

Faking It: Engine-Sound Enhancement Explained - Tech Dept. - Car and Driver

The flat 6 has an inherent strange "flatulent" sound as it comes off revs with many exhausts, I've heard it explained before but forget the specifics. My Box S had a B & B exhaust on it that had a beautiful burble to it that kept me from pulling it due to drone.

Definitely the best sounding automatic Porsche...

Well until the automatic 991 GT3 crashes the party.

Tucker2 06-08-2014 09:39 PM

I think that sounds awesome. I don't understand the negative comments. Exhaust is exhaust. Manipulate it as you will.

Fantastic car .
I've been drooling over one for the last few weeks at circle porsche .
White and decked out with red/black porsche livery (I think from cfos)
They also had a black one in , but I think that sold .
My service guy told me I could get one the RSs they have coming in , unfortunately there is a little problem with that ........ I didn't win the lottery again this weekend
If I did , I'd be there this morning buying the gt3 and turbo S they have in , and putting my name on that RS .
That would only blow half a million ........

It's automatic. The software is actually changing the gear, not a direct hand-on-gear lever-to-trans interplay. The software will even allow you to mess up a down/up change to make you think you're doing the actual gear shift. It's either a mechanical transmission, where the driver does the physical shift, or its HAL doing the shifting which makes it an automatic. Or in the case of PDK a sporty automatic. It's also part of the reason why racing is so boring and so few drivers can overtake (cleanly) anymore.

Ian c 06-09-2014 09:15 AM

What a load of nonsense .
That's like saying an electronic throttle is to blame and we should go back to throttle cables .

My my my god, thanks for the share... nice find

Love it. Fake exhaust note or not, that's what I have on the 986 already anyway lol

A manual transmission is a very simple concept. It is or it isn't.
Either the driver is moving the gear or the car is doing it (i.e. automatic).

And partly why the 997 GT3's will be some of the most sought after in a few short years. It also helps that they don't catch fire.

If you were referencing racing, some things have indeed progressed in the name of safety even if it meant losing some control over the car. But at the end of the day driver skill comes down to throttle, brake, gear lever and steering wheel. If you're cutting into those for reasons other than safety, you are watering down the traditional driver skill set that has existed for decades. Either to allow the computer to produce a faster lap time or to protect the driver from his own equipment destroying, position losing errors.

ekam 06-09-2014 11:06 AM

.2 RS prices are going up right now due to the bad rep of GT3 catching fire and delay of the new RS...

The sport automatic gearbox it is slowly killing the traditional/manual gearboxes, they are faster, accurate, in sync, and smarter than the driver :p The only bit you lose is the clutch feel but that was replaced by a "launch control" if I'm not mistaken

In that context, it does makes the manual gearbox look like a very simple concept, yes lol

With all the electronic additions to the Porsche line (now fake burbling too lol), I'm truly liking my air cooled 911 more and more...............

Sounds like my Boxster S with the sports exhaust. So the GTS has a few more options included as standard, an enhanced profile and an extra 10bhp - is it really worth it for 1mph gain?

Flavor 987S 06-11-2014 04:58 AM

Great vid. Great road! Car sounds awesome! That's how my 991S PowerKit sounds. With the Sport Chrono, you get rev-matched down shifts with the 7MT (the vid has PDK.....and rev matches too). I love the sound, and I was used to a 993 Turbo with FabSpeed bypass. This is even better.
