Device in halogen headlight

How is the leveling device used in the headlight ?

Also why is there just one ...why not both headlights ??

If you're talking about the flat white plastic bar with the hashmarks on it, there should be one in each headlight.
They're completely useless.

The only way to accurately check the alignment is to aim your headlights on to a wall and do it correctly. The lower part of the cutoff should dip 2 inches at 25 feet.

Yes , that is what I am interested in....I couldn't see how it could help. That is the same procedure I used on my E36 when I did the HID upgrade with projectors....thanks

There's just no way it can have any level of accuracy. I can move the beam dip 3 to 6 inches at 25 feet before I see any movement on that marker.
