986 Wrecked - Got a 996 Today!
This is a follow on to these threads: http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/43878-ahhh-my-car-hit-bad-today.html and http://986forum.com/forums/general-discussions/44083-986-wrecked-replacement-thoughts.html
The 986 was a total loss. When all is said and done, the insurance company is going to pay me $15K + give me my wrecked car back.
So, I went out and bought a 1999 996 for $10K. Yes, $10K! Car is in very good condition with 110,000 miles. PPI done at EF1 Motorsports in Long Beach. New clutch at 90k. Water pump, AOS, brake pads/rotors all new within the past year. Needs new coil packs, spark plugs, and a few other minor items. First impression is that the additional 100hp of the 996 sure is nice!
This leaves me $5K + my all of the parts from my damaged 986 BSX towards having a Spec Boxster (BSR) built. I'll have to add a bit of my own money to get there but it is within sight!

I have seen quiet a few. You have to buy from the owners and use the forums. There are always motivated sellers anxious to get into their next toys who dont want to get hosed on trade in. Theyd rather sell to another enthusiast. Theres a forum member Groovezilla on Rennlist who has it as his hobby to buy 996's for 10k. As soon as he is driving one hes already searching for the next. He has some good tips on what sort of sellers and locations to hone in on. Seems like people in th major cities think their 996 was not mass produced and that the average buyer isnt leary of a German sportscar nearly a decade out of warranty requiring expensive parts and specialized labor--these guys still think its still worth $20k. The guys outside of the major markets are a bit more realistic.
Few weeks back I saw an 2003 Cab black\tan with about ~80k listed for $12k on Autotrader. Prices are all over the place but outstanding work is really the make or break question. A $10k 996 still on original clutch/ims, shocks and no addressing of known weak spots like AOS, waterpump is not a steal.

Exactly! This describes the seller that I bought from. In the Craigslist ad he mentioned that he wanted the car to go to a good home and he didn't want to even talk to anyone who was going to flip the car. He got serious about working with me when I sent him a pic of the wrecked Boxster.

Yep. That Sort Of Work Done At 90K Miles Definitely Sounds Like An Enthusiast. A Casual Owner Would Just Dump It. Casual Owners Are Also Less Likely To Be Changing ThE Oil More Than Once A Year Or Using AN Oil With More Protection Than Just Mobil 1.Short Shifting The Car Too Often And Letting The Car Too Long Without N Alignment (Screws Up Expensive 986 Tires). Lots Of Costly Repairs Can Be Avoided By Buying From An Enthusiast.

Yes, "stumbling into it" is a good description. Found the car on Craigslist. Owner was looking for a quick sell for all cash with no hassle. Turns out he had lost his job eight months ago, needed cash quick, and I was the first guy to show up with cash in hand. Job done.

Good find! The past few cars of mine (including my 986) came from a private party off of Craigslist. Just looking at the shear volume of cars (and other goodies) that pass through Craigslist, there are bound to be some bargains out there. Hell, I better go look right now.
